Description The project aims to examine documents preserved in the Library of Masino Castle related to Fra’ Giuseppe Giorgio Valperga di Masino, a key member of the Order of Malta in the 18th century. By reconstructing a relatively unknown biography, the project intends to analyze Fra’ Giuseppe Giorgio’s skills in military and civil architecture. The collection includes views of Valletta and detailed plans of the city, along with drawings of civil structures such as palaces and gardens. The project also seeks to compare Masino's figure with other aristocratic architects of the period within the Piedmontese and Mediterranean context of the 18th century.
The thesis proposal is part of an international project entitled ‘Malta & Europe, Europe & Malta. Dissemination of knowledge, sources and architectural models through the network of the Order of St John’ run jointly by the University of Palermo (Prof. Armando Antista), Politecnico di Torino (Prof. Valentina Burgassi), and the University of Malta (Prof. Valeria Vanesio).
