Digital Twins in the built environment: the case for active, responsive and solar facades (thesis, or thesis + internship) - iclimabuilt project

keywords BUILDING PERFORMANCE SIMULATION, DYNAMIC FACADES, ENERGY ANALYSIS, ENERGY PERFORMANCE OF THE BUILDING ENVELOPE, ENVIRONMENTAL COMFORT, EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY, IOT AND SENSORS

Reference persons FABIO FAVOINO, MARCO PERINO

Research Groups TEBE (http://www.tebe.polito.it/)

Description The thesis is aimed to explore and understand the use of Digital TWINS to support the development and implementation of innovative building envelope systems.
The first part of the thesis is mainly a research report based mostly on literature survey, to understand (i) the use of digital twins for the building industry, especially as related to development, tests and implementation of innovative and solar building envelope systems; (ii) the requirements of such digital twins; (iii) the architecture of a digital twins systems for deployment in real time; (iv) case studies on the use of digital twins in the built environment (mainly aimed at improving energy efficiency and environmental comfort).
The literature review will set the base for the following possible activities (depending on the possibility to do the intership with the thesis, and the knowledge and attitute of the student):
(i) set-up of a building simulation framework (based on Python language), enabling co-simulation between EnergyPlus and building envelope models (these are already developed by the research group), and explore the use of such a simulation framework, as a digital twin. The model could reproduce either thermal or daylight environment, or both;
(ii) set-up of a reduced digital twin of the outdoor test cell of the research group, aimed at performing tests on innovative building envelope components (based on models already developed, or most of them).

Required skills Knowledge of Building Physics fundamentals and advanced concepts (at least 2 building physics courses completed during the BSc and MSc degree); willingness and attitude for literature review, modelling (with EnergyPlus and with physical equations) and programming (Matlab or Python); Excellent Excel skills; elements of Python or Matlab programming (or willingness to learn some); Use of Energyplus or equivalent building energy performance simulation tools.
