Description Nowadays, several tools for monitoring and controlling smartphone usage and achieving "digital wellbeing" exist. These Digital Self-Control Tools allow users to track their smartphone use and to define interventions, e.g., timers , to self-regulate their behavior with the smartphone. Unfortunately, the mechanisms employed in such tools are often not effective in the long-term. A more promising approach is to promote a greater awareness about the negative impact of some apps and social networks, to nudge people into making more deliberate decisions when it comes to the use of smartphones.

The main goal of this thesis is to design and evaluate the efficacy of this approach. To do so, the student will identify some nudging strategies, to co-design a suitable user interface with habitual smartphone users. The interface will be then developed and evaluated with a medium-term study, to assess the efficacy and the impact of the identified strategies.

The outcomes of the work, if satisfying and appropriate, will be made freely available as open source/open data.
