Description Natural ventilation is an important and complex problem from a fluid-dynamic point of view. In fact, it exhibits bistabilities, strong non-linearities, feedbacks and threshold effects. Furthermore, this issue has very relevant implications in many areas; just think to the house healthiness, energy savings, and the pathogenes spread in closed environments (houses, theaters, cinemas, etc.). But also to the role that natural ventilation plays in the natural world (eg, ventilation of hives and anthills, ventilation of caves, etc.).
In this vast field, several crucial aspects are still to be understood and one of the most important concerns the effects caused by the stochastic components. They are omnipresent and it is easy to imagine their presence in natural ventilation; e.g., fluctuations in the flow field around buildings, wake effects, thermal fluctuations, etc.. Although it is well-known that the random components can induce remakable structural changes in the dynamics (the so-called noise-induced phenomena), these aspects have practically never been investigated in the context of natural ventilation. The thesis deals precisely with these topics, aiming to answer questions such as: are small fluctuations able to alter the equilibrium points of the system? Can they stabilize deterministically unstable points? Is it possible to control natural ventilation by acting on the floating components of the external forcings?
These are questions of great importance both from a conceptual point of view and for the important application consequences.
