Innovative catalysts for indoor air purification at low temperature

keywords HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS

Reference persons MARCO PIUMETTI

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL

Description In recent years, many studies have focused on the importance of reducing not only CO2 emissions from industries, but also other more harmful compounds such as VOCs in the atmosphere. For some time, the focus has been on strategies to purify the outdoor air by reducing concentrations of these pollutants. However, scientific studies have confirmed that indoor pollution may be more dangerous and, prolonged exposure to these compounds, even at low concentrations, can cause damage to human health. The purpose of this thesis proposal is to develop an innovative catalyst for the abatement of pollutants, in particular VOCs and CO, at low temperature for indoor air purification in order to improve the air breathed inside homes. In particular, the student will have to study and synthesize manganese oxide-based catalysts functionalized with noble metal nanoparticles for the abatement of VOCs and CO at room temperature through a particular synthesis procedure. Analytical techniques (such as XRD, XPS, N2-physisorption, FESEM, FT-IR, TEM, etc.) will be used to investigate the chemical-physical properties and catalytic tests will be simulated on a laboratory scale in order to assess the effectiveness of this catalytic system and evaluate the catalytic activity.
