Description The recent Russia-Ukraine conflict emphasized the need to decrease the energy dependency of many European countries and lead to the REPower EU Plan: it includes a review of the European energy supply chain, to rapidly reduce the dependence on Russian fossil fuels, continuing to tackle the climate crisis. The energy security strategies and scenarios can be suitable studied using bottom-up energy system models, where the upstream sector of an energy system includes the internal production and import of fossil fuels, hydrogen and biomass-based fuels (also called biofuels). The aim of the thesis is to analyze the possible evolution of the Italian energy system upstream sector using the TIMES/TEMOA-Italy model, including the upstream-related measures of the REPower EU, such as the diversification of fossil fuel import and the substitution of fossil fuels with more sustainable ones, like hydrogen and biofuels.

Required skills Attendance of the course "Models and scenarios for energy planning".
