Description This thesis focuses on the design, from the electronics and PCB point of view, of an embedded board to support wireless connectivity between vehicles and in general networked devices.
The main idea behind the project is to develop a flexible embedded board able to accommodate multiple off-the-shelf modules providing the needed connectivity, and, at the same time, enough disk space, RAM and computing power to support standardized vehicular applications (such as the dissemination of periodic kinematic and dynamic data through one of the modules providing wireless connectivity).
The project starts from the selection of a proper CPU and architecture, starting from a set of requirements (for instance, number of parallel mini PCI express modules supported, types of I/O, number of USB and Ethernet ports), and considering also the low-power requirements of a standard V2X On-Board Unit (OBU), powered by a 12 V source.
After the definition of the initial requirements, the student will work on the design of the board using a set of professional tools for PCB design, such as for example Allegro PCB Designer, Altium or KiCAD. The final board will possibly have the selected CPU and RAM, a set of mini PCI express slots (one connected to a SIM card slot to provide 4G/LTE/5G connectivity), a slot for the installation of an SSD and/or SD card, a set of USB ports, and at least a couple of Ethernet ports, with the addition, if possible, of a DB9 serial port.
Although challenging, the project stands in a research topic with very high international interest, as the vehicular communication field.
