Thesis type CODING AND EXPERIMENTAL

Description Additive manufacturing by electron beam melting (EBM) is a manufacturing that realizes metallic objects layer by layer: a layer of metal powder is placed on the previous layer, and a focused electron beam selectively melts powder particles following a digital representation of the object.
This complex process requires fast monitoring systems to predict anomalies and control. Among the possible technologies, detecting backscattered electrons (BSEs) seems a promising alternative because it allows the creation of images (called ELO) of each layer to identify porosities and other defects in the realised parts.
The objective of the thesis is the development of a monitoring system for an EBM machine based on BSEs for the detection of anomalies.

Required skills Computer programming and data analytics skills. Basics of image processing/computer vision is a plus.
