Description Motivation:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are drones with autonomous control, and their use in critical environments it's rapidly increasing.
While managing the payloads of these systems, high dependability, low power, and computational capabilities are concurrently required.
Many UAVs uses on-board cameras to take video of the environment and send it to the ground station, by using a lot of bandwidth.

Goals:
The thesis aims at the development of a FPGA-based MPEG compression algorithm to be used as on-board payload controller of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
The system has to compress the video in real-time in order to send to the ground station the required information to control the flight, assuring as well a good level of dependability during the compression.

Learning Outcomes:
During this thesis the candidate will learn how to design FPGA-based systems, manage different kind of data, and guarantee the required level of dependability.

Required skills Programming Languages: C, VHDL, Matlab
Digital System design methodologies

Notes The thesis will be developed in cooperation with: Eurix
Number of required Students: 1
