Description This thesis aims at exploring how the Blockchain [1], the same technology at the foundation of Bitcoin cryptocurrency, can be exploited to build innovative tools for services designed to improve smart cities mobility behaviors.

Nowadays, there is strong interest in reducing CO2 emission due to citizens intra-city daily travels and leveraging on ICT to facilitate the adoption of more sustainable mobility behaviors (e.g., walking, bicycling, car-pooling, electric car-sharing, efficient public transportation). Certifying, properly tracking and managing the sustainable behaviors of users is therefore a key aspect of any smart mobility solution. While reliably identifying and measuring the various modes of traveling is the starting point for the design of behavioral change strategies, certifying such modes and changes in mobility patterns, to the extent for example of granting incentives in case of “green” behavioral change, is a key challenge of such a solution.

This thesis will undertake this challenge by exploring the potential of the Blockchain smart contracts technology in order to build an effective smart mobility marketplace, where users’ sustainable behaviors can be both certified and rewarded. Thesis main output will be the design, prototyping and validation of a smart mobility system’s building block enabling the creation of such a marketplace. Software development activities, in particular, will be carried out by using the Ethereum framework [2][3], a promising Blockchain smart contracts platform for the development of decentralized applications, where smart contracts execution is secured by deploying them on the Ethereum Blockchain.

The result of the work could contribute to the Open Agorà project [4], where TIM and Politecnico of Turin are key partners. Depending on the result, possible adoption of the solution in field trial will be evaluated.
