Description Spray freeze-drying is a promising technology to produce porous particles with physical and aerodynamic properties that are suitable for many pharmaceutical applications. Spray freeze-drying process involves the spray freezing of a liquid solution into a freezing medium and the freeze-drying of frozen particles collected in vials. This project deals with the development of a multi-scale mathematical model, describing heat and mass transfer within the packed-bed of frozen particles, which can provide new insight into the impact of operating conditions on the process performance, and predict the effects of operation policy on drying time and product quality.

Key features: heat & mass transfer in porous media, CFD, random packing generation, Discrete Element Method Particle Simulation, modeling of transport in rarefied gas
