Course attendance and exams
Course attendance and timetables
Teaching at Politecnico is organized in two semesters. Full information on how classes are organized is available in the Chronological calendar and Thematic calendar.
Official course timetables are available on the Teaching Portal - Student ServicesCourse timetables. You can also find the timetables of the courses you included in your Annual Personal Study Plan on your personal page of the Teaching Portal.
Course attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended to all students. Politecnico di Torino believes in the importance of attending classes in order to gain the competencies needed to achieve the learning objectives of its courses.

Exams and dates
At the end of each course, you are examined to verify if you reached the expected learning outcomes. You can take an exam for the first time only after having added the corresponding course in your Annual Personal Study Plan (APSP) and only after the course has been delivered.
If you want to take an exam before the course is delivered, you need to ask for a specific authorization from the teaching staff responsible for the course (this is the case if a course is offered in second semester but you want to take the exam before attending classes in the winter examination session). This is possible only for courses that are included in your APSP for academic year 2019/20. You need to send a duly justified request through a guided procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal – Online Services – Exams – Exam Schedule and Registration.
The guided procedure will be available when exam registrations open.
In some cases, you may not be allowed to take the exams of courses taught through video lectures before the course is actually delivered.Check the curriculum of your degree programme to verify if courses taught through video lectures are already available and when you can take the exams. You will find a symbol next to each exam.
  • Case 1 – Lectures were recorded in past academic years: video lectures are already available but you are NOT allowed to take the exam before the course is delivered.
  • Case 2 – Lectures are going to be recorded in a.y. 2019/20: you are NOT allowed to take the exam before the course is delivered. Video lectures will become available at a later stage during the year.
  • Case 3  -  Lectures were recorded in past academic years: video lectures are already available and  you ARE ALLOWED take the exam before the course is delivered.
The exam dates (appelli d’esame) for each course are scheduled by the Exam Advisors of the various Departments. You can check the exam dates on the Teaching Portal - Student Services Exam dates. When two exam dates for the same course are scheduled during the same examination session, you are allowed to take the exam on both dates, even if you fail the exam at first attempt.
You must register for your exams using the online guided procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. Exam registrations are computerized.
You must always be examined by the board of examiners chaired by the faculty member who taught the course you were registered for (you are not allowed to take the exam with a different board of examiners).
For courses regularly offered during a.y. 2019/20: the board of examiners is chaired by the faculty member responsible for teaching that specific course in a.y. 2019/20.
For courses regularly offered during a.y. 2018/19:  you must be examined by the board of examiners chaired by the faculty member responsible for teaching that specific course in a.y. 2018/19.
When more than one faculty member teach the same subject, you must be examined by the teaching staff who taught your course. Students are assigned to a certain faculty member based on specific criteria (alphabetical order, course choice, degree programme, etc...).
For courses already included in your past Annual Personal Study Plan: you must be examined by the faculty member who taught that course when you took it for the first time. You can check his/her name on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. If he/she does no longer teach that course, you will be assigned to another instructor.
When a course is discontinued (i.e, it is no longer offered by Politecnico), you can take the corresponding exam until the last examination session of the academic year following the year in which you took the course (next September).
If you do not pass the exam before this deadline, you must replace it with a new course which is still on the course catalogue. The Collegio of your degree programme will provide guidance on this issue.
