Course attendance and timetables
Course attendance and timetables
Teaching at Politecnico is organised in two semesters. Complete information on how classes are organized is available in the Chronological calendar and Thematic calendar. Official course timetables are available on the Teaching Portal - Student ServicesCourse timetables. You can also find the timetables of the courses you have included in your Annual Personal Study Plan on your personal page of the Teaching Portal.
Course attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended to all students.
Politecnico di Torino believes in the importance of attending classes to gain the skills needed to achieve the learning objectives of its courses.
Exams and dates
  • Taking the exams
At the end of each course, you are examined to verify if you have reached the expected learning outcomes. You can take an exam for the first time only after having added the corresponding course in your Annual Personal Study Plan (APSP) and only after the course has been delivered.
If you want to take an exam before the course is delivered, you need to ask for specific authorization from the teaching staff responsible for the course (this is the case if a course is offered in the second semester but you want to take the exam in the winter examination session before attending classes). You need to send a duly justified request through a guided procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal – Online Services TAB – Exams portlet – Exam Schedule and Registration
The guided procedure will be available when exam registrations are open.
  • Rules for courses taught through video lectures
In some cases, you may not be allowed to take the exams of courses taught through video lectures before the course is actually delivered. Check the curriculum of your degree programme to verify if courses taught through video lectures are already available and when you can take the exams. You will find a symbol  next to each exam.
    • Case 1 – Lectures were recorded in past academic years: video lectures are already available but you are NOT allowed to take the exam before the course is delivered.
    • Case 2 – Lectures are going to be recorded in a.y. 2021/2022: you are NOT allowed to take the exam before the course is delivered. Video lectures will become available at a later stage during the year.
    • Case 3 - Lectures were recorded in past academic years: video lectures are already available and you ARE ALLOWED to take the exam before the course is delivered.
  • Board of examiners
You must always be examined by the board of examiners chaired by the faculty member who has taught the course you were registered for (you are not allowed to take the exam with a different board of examiners). For courses offered during the current academic year, the board of examiners is chaired by the faculty member responsible for teaching that specific course.
When more than one faculty member teaches the same subject, you must be examined by the teaching staff who has taught your course. Students are assigned to a certain faculty member based on specific criteria (alphabetical order, course choice, degree programme, etc...).For courses already included in your past Annual Personal Study Plan: you must be examined by the faculty member who taught that course when you took it for the first time. You can check his/her name on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. If he/she does no longer teach that course, you will be assigned to another instructor.
When a course is discontinued (i.e, it is no longer offered by Politecnico), you can take the corresponding exam until the last examination session of the academic year following the year in which you took the course (next September). If you do not pass the exam before this deadline, you must replace it with a new course which is still in the course catalogue. The Collegio of your degree programme will provide guidance on this issue.
  • Schedule of exam dates
The exam dates (appelli d’esame) for each course are scheduled by the Exam Advisors of the various Departments. You can check the exam dates:
    • on the Teaching Portal - Student Services Exam dates.
    • on your personal page of the Teaching Portal - Exams section.
When a course has two exam dates scheduled during the same examination session, you are allowed to take the exam on both dates, even if you fail the exam at the first attempt.
You must register for your exams through the online guided procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. Exam registrations are computerized.
We remind you that Politecnico cannot ensure that the exams of courses belonging to different years do not overlap.
Extraordinary examination sessions
For the academic calendar 2022/2023, there will be an extraordinary autumn examination session (for second-semester courses) and an extraordinary spring examination session ( (for first-semester courses) reserved for students who have attended ALL the courses of their study plan (attendance of the Internship and Final Examination/Thesis will not be taken into account).
It will be possible to take a maximum of 2 exams in each session
.
Second-semester courses with video lectures (identified with a green video camera in the course catalog) included for the first time in the APSP 2022/23  will get the actual attendance only after the end of the semester in which the course is taught. Therefore, these courses will not enable registration for the extraordinary examination sessions.

EXAMS AND BOOKINGS
 From your personal page of the Teaching Portal, My academic progress  TAB, remote exams PORTLET, Exam schedule and registration, you can register for a maximum of two exams. The exam dates and venues will be defined at a later stage (message: “to be defined). After the registration deadline and before the beginning of the session, you will be able to check if the session is confirmed (date-time, venue-classroom, exam type…) from the portlet named Your exam registrations
Exams will be confirmed and scheduled exclusively if there is at least one student who has registered for the exam before the registration deadline. Politecnico cannot ensure that the dates of the two exams for which you have registered will not overlap.
Exams for students selected for a mobility programme new
Politecnico (with the resolution of the Committee for Teaching Coordination dated 08/06/2021) decided that students selected for a mobility programme aboard (virtual or physical mobility):
  • cannot attend any Polito course included in their Annual Personal Study Plan (no matter if the course is present in their Learning Agreement or not) nor take the corresponding exam;
  • can ask the professor of a Polito course included in their Annual Personal Study Plan but NOT included in their Learning Agreement the authorization to take the exam at Politecnico: a) before the course is actually delivered (i.e., before the mobility period) or, b) after the end of the mobility period and after the course is delivered (although it has not been attended since the student was abroad);
  • can ask the professor of a Polito course included in their Learning Agreement but NOT passed during the mobility period at the foreign university the authorization to take the exam at Politecnico after the end of the mobility period (the authorization can be granted after Politecnico Offices verify in the student’s transcript of records that the exam is still unpassed);
  • have access to the teaching materials made available by each professor for the courses included in their Annual Personal Study Plan but not in their Learning Agreement;
  • can take exams at Politecnico (provided that students have attended the courses before departure) but in this case, the mobility scholarship will be reduced by an amount corresponding to 4 days abroad for each exam taken at Politecnico.
