The recognition of additional foreign languages can only take place in during the Bachelor's degree programme.
RESEARCH ESSAY
The Research essay is not assigned to students on the basis of merit. When you create your PSP/APSP, you must enter the  denomination and the code indicated in the Teaching portal "Course catalogue - Curriculum".
The Research Essay is carried out by the student under the supervision and coordination of a University lecturer (tutor).
The topic of the Research Essay is agreed directly by the student with the tutor who, upon completion of the work, gives an evaluation (a grade out of thirty) on the basis of the level of depth and maturity achieved by the student, the originality of the topic, the correctness, the capacity to summarize and the degree of autonomy demonstrated by the student.
The Academic Advisor of the programme is responsible for recording the grade in the student's transcript.


COURSES FROM THE COURSE CATALOGUE OF POLITECNICO SUBJECT TO MERIT-BASED ALLOCATIONS  
Free choice credits from Politecnico course catalogue are the following:
  • Courses offered in the course catalogue of Politecnico di Torino suggested by the various Collegi;
  • Big Global Challenges courses (available in second semester - 15 places for each course for all Bachelor's degree programmes of the Architecture Area)
  • Courses offered by the University of Turin (3 places for all Bachelor's degree programmes of Politecnico)
  • Courses offered by Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti di Torino (3 places for all Bachelor's degree programmes of Politecnico)
  • Courses offered by Istituto Universitario Salesiano Torino Rebaudengo (3 places for all Bachelor's degree programmes of Politecnico)
Before ranking your courses in order of preference, make sure you read the information available in the programme curriculum, in particular the features of each course.

We remind you that:
  • Politecnico cannot ensure that the schedule of these courses will not overlap with PoliTo compulsory courses.
  • You are not allowed to modify these courses after the allocations take place nor during the year.
If you plan to graduate in February/March 2024, we suggest you to choose courses offered in first semester.

The allocation of these courses is subject to a merit ranking and according to the places reserved for students of the Bachelor's degree programmes of the Collegi di "Architecture", "Design" and "Planning and Design".
Exceptions are the DESIGN WORKSHOPS (Workshop I – Workshop II) for which there are different assignment methods and deadlines, which are reported in a specific section on this page.
Course allocation - first phase
You must rank in order of preference all your optional courses (merit-based allocations) offered in first and in second semester when you create your Personal Study Plan/Annual Personal Study Plan. The time frame here below is written in the academic calendar too:

  • from 20th July 2023 to 17th September 2023 
Course allocations - Second phase
If you have not ranked your optional courses in order of preference when you created your PSP/APSP, you will be given the opportunity to express your preferences among the courses with residual places during a second phase. You can choose between:
- courses offered in the course catalogue of Politecnico di Torino suggested by the various Collegi of Politecnico di Torino;
- Big Global Challenges courses. 
You need to rank your courses in order of preference through the guided procedure for the creation of your Personal Study Plan / Annual Personal Study Plan between 10:00 a.m. of 9th October 2023 and 11:59 p.m. of 13th October 2023. At the end of this period, Politecnico will draw up the merit-based ranking list. The course you have been assigned to will be automatically included in your PSP/APSP.
You will be allowed to express your preferences only if you had previously inserted in your APSP one or two among the generic codes "University catalogue: free choice courses subject to merit allocations from table 1/2" shown in the curriculum. 
In order to express your preferences, log into your personal page of the Teaching Portal, go to "Segreteria on-line"/"Online services" TAB, then select "Accedi"/"Access" and click on "Compila il piano carriera – carico didattico"/"Create your PSP/APSP" portlet. 
Calculation of the merit score:
 (V1 * CFU1) + (V2 * CFU2) + (Vn * CFUn) + (overall weighted average * CFU eligibility)

The number of semesters is calculated starting from the first enrolment in the University system; the score is calculated taking into account only those exams that were recognized and validated by Politecnico di Torino.

For the purpose of course allocations both in the first and in the second semester, the calculation of the merit score is based on the exams passed within the July 2023 examination session.

How to rank the order of preference of courses proposed by the coure of study
Merit-based allocations
Upon completion of your PSP/APSP, you will be redirected to a new page. From this page you can express your preferences only for the courses which have a generic code in your APSP. You can establish the order of preference using the arrows or dragging and dropping the courses names, as illustrated in picture no.1. 
Picture 1You can repeat this procedure until the closure of the time frame dedicated to the definition of the annual personal study plan.
COURSES OFFERED BY ACCADEMIA ALBERTINA DI BELLE ARTI DI TORINO
You can choose a course offered by Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin, Italy (the list of courses is available in the course catalogue for a.y. 2023/24. See the relevant notes).
A maximum of 50 students will be admitted to these courses with a limit of 3 students for each course.
If applications exceed this number, students will be chosen based on a merit ranking list, created by the Division of Student Affairs.  Students admitted to a course at Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti will receive a special message with the instructions to register for the courses. Please consider that we cannot ensure that these courses will not overlap with your PoliTO lectures.
You are required to select the courses offered by other Universities during the period for the creation of your Personal Study Plan / Annual Personal Study Plan. They cannot be chosen later.

INTERNSHIP
The Internship allows to earn 10 free credits only to those who enrolled starting from the a.y. 2021/22.
When you create your PSP/APSP, you must enter the  denomination and the code indicated in the teaching portal "Course catalogue - Curriculum".

LEARNING ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY
Politecnico can recognize 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 credits depending on the activity. Politecnico can recognize more than one learning activities outside the University during your educational path.
You can ask for the recognition of training activities undertaken outside Politecnico if they are relevant to and coherent with your degree programme. 
You can ask for the recognition of external activities that you have carried out outside the University before your enrolment at Politecnico, but you must do it during the admission phase (credit transfer). After enrolment you can only request the recognition of activities carried out during your course of study.
Politecnico does not recognize any activity which lasted less than 50 hours (2 credits).
Politecnico does not have a specific list of recommended learning activities outside the University.
As a general rule, Politecnico can award you some credits if:  
  • you participated in lectures/conferences/ courses, provided that the teaching contents, duration and testing methods can be clearly identified;
  • you won or were selected for a competition for ideas/design:
  • you attended a specific School (i.e, Summer School)
  • you have professional skills which are in line with the learning objectives of your degree programme
  • you took part in workshops;
  • you have taken part in the Civil Service with tasks that are coherent with the learning outcomes of your degree programme.
You cannot ask for the recognition of the following activities: 
  • internships;
  • professional licenses;
  • cooperation with associations;
  • scholarships;
  • computer licences  (i.e., ECDL);
  • aptitude tests (i.e., SAT)
COMPETITIVE SPORTING ACTIVITIES 
Politecnico can recognize up to a maximum of 6 academic credits, only one time during the entire duration of your studies  (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme). 
If you practice sports at a competitive level (as an athlete, coach or referee) or if you achieve outstanding results in sports competitions while you are studying at the university, you can ask for recognition of this activity at any time during your university studies in accordance with the following rules:
  •  6 credits for students who participate in the Dual Career Politecnico programme;
  • up to 6 credits for students who have achieved sports results of the utmost excellence. In particular:
    • Olympic medal:  6 credits;
    • World medal, European or Universiadi medal, champion of division in Italian championships: 6 credits for gold medals, 5 credits for silver medals, 4 credits for bronze medals;
  •  3 credits for students who have been selected to play in Politecnico sports teams;
  •  3 credits for competitive sports activities with the all the following requirements:
    •  competitive activity in a sport with a federation approved by CONI and/or CPI
    • 4 weekly training sessions/competitions (1.5 hours each)
    •  participation in top-level national and regional championships;
After completing the procedure described below and filling out all the required fields, your credits will be automatically recognized as soon as you accept the approval of the board.
STUDENT TEAM ACTIVITIES
Politecnico can recognize from 2 to 12 credits, only one time during your Bachelor’s degree programme and only one time during your Master’s degree programme. 
If you have been actively involved in a student team, you can ask for the recognition of this activity after completing your collaboration with the team. 
Participation in a student team can be recognized even if it exceeds the number of credits required for graduation (credit overload), but within the limit of 12 extra credits. It is recognized on a pass-or-fail basis.
Procedure
To apply for recognition, regardless of the type of activity, you must:
  • access the Segreteria online - portlet Approval of external activities
  • fill in all the required fields and attach the necessary documentation for the various types of activity. For external training activities and for student team activities, it will be necessary to attach the documentation relating to the program of the activity for which evaluation is requested, with the description of the activity and its duration and the certificate of attendance/participation;
  • if the activity for which recognition is to be requested has already ended, it is necessary to indicate the start and end date of the activity itself. If the recognition request was sent to an activity that has not yet been completed, it will be necessary to resubmit the request once the activity has been completed
  • indicate in the box Note for the Faculty Member if recognition is requested instead of free credits and the elective course or courses to be replaced in the event of approval;
  • click on Save and submit to send the request.
  • It is possible at any time to view the status of the request for approval of other external activities.
  • Who has the role of the Referee for the course of study will carry out the evaluation and - in case of approval - will indicate the number of recognized credits and any replacement with free credits present in the career.
  • Recognition can take place in compliance with the maximum number of credits that can be included in the annual personal study plan allowed by the type of enrollment chosen and the maximum number of credits that can be included in the study plan.
If your activity is approved, you must:
  1. go back to the Approval of external activities portlet; 
  2. click the "View" button (referred to the approved activity);
3. in the next screen click the "Accept" button.
The procedure ends when you accept and the activity is recorded in your transcript.
IMPORTANT:
If the following message is displayed: "insufficient space in your Annual Personal Study Plan, contact the Office of Student Services", it means that you have already reached the maximum number of credits allowed in your APSP. In this case, even if your external activity replaces some free choice credits, this replacement will not be automatic. You will have to contact the Student Registry Office which will update your APSP. If, on the other hand, the inclusion of the supernumerary activity has been requested, it cannot be added as there is not enough space, it can therefore be added in the following academic year, once enrolment will have been completed.

ELECTIVE COURSES
The course catalogue of free choice credits includes some "elective courses" which investigate topics connected with the subjects of the Master's degree programme.
Denominations and descriptions of elective courses can be found in the course catalogue 2023/24 of your degree programme.
Students are allowed to directly select elective courses while they create their PSP/APSP.
If applications are more than 50 (maximum number of students per course), elective courses will be allocated to students based on a merit ranking list.
