Course attendance and timetables
Course attendance and timetables
Teaching at Politecnico is organised in two semesters. Complete information on how classes are organized is available in the   academic calendar of the Student Guide.
Official course timetables are published on the website of the university.
You can also find the timetables of the courses that you have included in your Annual Personla Study Plan  on your personal page of the Teaching Portal.
Course attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended to all students.
Politecnico di Torino believes in the importance of attending classes to gain the skills needed to achieve the learning objectives of its courses.
We remind you that Politecnico cannot ensure that the timetable of courses belonging to different years do not overlap.
Exams and dates
  • Taking the exams
At the end of each course, you are examined to verify if you have reached the expected learning outcomes. You can take an exam for the first time only after having added the corresponding course in your Annual Personal Study Plan (APSP) and only after the course has been delivered. A course is considered "attended" at the end of the semester in which the course is delivered.
You are allowed to register for and take an exam only if the course has been includend in the APSP of the  corresponding academic year. Moreover, you need to have completed the enrolment process and to have paid your tuition fees.
You can take an exam if:

  1. it is marked as an "ATTENDED"
  2. it is not marked as "ATTENDED", but it is an exam listed among those that can be taken before attending the course (this information is shown in the course syllabus with the symbol  )
If you wish to take the exam of a course that you have not attended and that is not listed as a course that can be taken before attendance , only for courses included on your APSP, you can ask for specific authorization from the teaching staff.
You need to send a duly justified request through a guided procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal – Online Services TAB – Exams portlet – Exam Schedule and Registration
The guided procedure will be available when exam registrations are open.
During the exam, the teaching staff is entitled to verify your identity and may ask you to show your photo ID document on top of your student ID card (smart card).
  • Rules for courses that are going to be discontinued

 When a course is discontinued (i.e, it will no longer be offered by Politecnico), you can take the corresponding exam until the last examination session of the academic year following the year in which you took the course (next September). If you do not pass the exam before this deadline, you must replace it with a new course suggested by the Collegio of your degree programme.
When you add a discontinued course to your Annual Personal Study Plan, the system will tell you the last examination session in which you can take the exam.
  • Board of examiners
You must always be examined by the board of examiners chaired by the faculty member who has taught the course you were registered for (you are not allowed to take the exam with a different board of examiners). For courses offered during the current academic year, the board of examiners is chaired by the faculty member responsible for teaching that specific course.
When more than one faculty member teaches the same subject, you must be examined by the teaching staff who has taught your course. Students are assigned to a certain faculty member based on specific criteria (alphabetical order, course choice, degree programme, etc...).
For courses already included in your past Annual Personal Study Plan: you must be examined by the faculty member who taught that course when you took it for the first time. You can check his/her name on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. If he/she does no longer teach that course, you will be assigned to another instructor.
  • Schedule of exam dates
The exam dates (appelli d’esame) for each course are scheduled by the Exam Advisors of the various Departments. You can check the exam dates:
    • on the website of the university;
    • on your personal page of the Teaching Portal - Exams section.
When a course has two exam dates scheduled during the same examination session, you are allowed to take the exam on both dates, even if you fail the exam at the first attempt.
You must register for your exams through the online guided procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. Exam registrations are computerized.
We remind you that Politecnico cannot ensure that the exams of courses belonging to different years do not overlap.

Exams for students selected for a mobility programme new
Politecnico (with the resolution of the Committee for Teaching Coordination dated 08/06/2021) established the following rules applicable to mobility students (i.e. students selected for a mobility programme aboard - virtual or in person mobility):
  • students cannot attend any Polito courses included in their Annual Personal Study Plan (no matter if the course is present in their Learning Agreement or not) nor take the corresponding exam at Polito. For courses included for the first time in the APSP: they will not be marked as "attended" at the end of the semester of course delivery.
  • For Polito courses included in the APSP but NOT included in the Learning Agreement: students can access the learning material provided by the teching staff.
  • For Polito courses included in the Annual Personal Study Plan but NOT included in the Learning Agreement: students can ask the professor the authorization to take the exam at Politecnico:
    • before the mobility period;
    • after the end of the mobility period and after the course has been delivered (although it has not been attended since the student was abroad);
  • For courses included in the Learning Agreement but NOT passed during the mobility period at the foreign university: students can ask the professor the authorization to take the exam at Politecnico after the end of the mobility period (the authorization can be granted after Politecnico offices verify in the student’s transcript of records that the exam is still unpassed);
  • For courses attended at Polito before departure: students can take these exams but the mobility scholarship will be reduced by an amount corresponding to 4 days abroad for each exam taken and registered at Politecnico.
Grade rejection
Starting from the winter examination session of the academic year 2023/2024, you are allowed to refuse the grade given within 48 hours from the communication of the results. After this period, if you do not refuse your grade, the exam will be automatically recorded in your Transcript (libretto elettronico).

There is no limit to the number of times that you may refuse a grade. Refusing a grade is not possible in the following cases:
  • failed exams;
  • ungraded exams (pass-or-fail exams without grade);
  • exams taken at another university during a mobility programme and validated by Politecnico upon return.
PROCEDURE
The procedure for grade rejection, along with the deadlines for choosing this option, becomes available after your exam grade has been consolidated (you will receive a notification email). You can find it on your personal page of the Teaching Portal -  “My academic progress” TAB , Exams and Evaluations portlet. The same procedure is also available on the Polito App in your Transcript.

The procedure for grade rejection allows you to :
- refuse the grade;
- request the immediate registration of the grade in your Transcript: this operation is not mandatory but recommended for students who need to have the grade recorded within 48 hours.
If you do not take any action, your grade will be automatically recorded in the Transcript after 48 hours from the publication of the exam results.

We remind you that refusing a grade is an irreversible action. If you confirm that you want to refuse your grade, it will not be possible to restore it under any circumstances.
