Internship
Internships are offered to students as the first real chance to gain experience in the world of work. An internship gives you the opportunity to put into practice what you have learned during your studies and it will help you decide about your future professional career. Politecnico di Torino promotes internships and guarantees insurance coverage both for civil liability and occupational injuries.

Before starting an internship, you need to include it in your Personal Study Plan/Annual Personal Study Plan in the academic year in which you would like to do your internship.

The documents and general rules for internships are published at this LINK
Below you can find the specific guidelines for each degree programme.

GUIDELINES
You can only do your internship in companies or public/private bodies outside Politecnico di Torino or other universities, in Italy or abroad. You must have earned at least 54 credits before you start the process to begin your internship which can take place at any time of the academic year.
The internship can be included in your Annual Personal Study Plan at any time of the year following the procedure described in the next section (see Notes).
If you are writing your Master's thesis at the same company where you did the internship, the two jobs (even if coordinated) must be clearly recognizable and they must be in line with the respective different number of credits.

Notes
The internship can be included in your Personal Study Plan exclusively by the Internship Coordinator of your degree programme.  You must have already earned the minimum number of required credits (54 CFU) in order to request the inclusion of the internship in your Annual Personal Study Plan. You must:
  • find an internship by contacting companies or public/private bodies (Politecnico and other Universities are excluded);
  • identify an Academic Tutor among the professors of Politecnico;
  • request the Company/Institution to send an e-mail to the Internship Coordinator (paolo.maggiore@polito.it), with copy to you and to the Study Programme Coordinator (lorenzo.casalino@polito.it), specifying their availability to host you as an intern and the internship period;
  • forward the email sent by the company to the Study Programme Coordinator (lorenzo.casalino@polito.it), indicating the code and title of the course (6 CFU) that you wish to replace with the internship.
You are allowed to replace only one optional course  (6 CFU free choice credits) with an internship or with activities in student teams.
Additional information
You can find the instructions about the platform that you need to use to upload your internship project and to report the internship progress till its completion at:
https://www.polito.it/en/education/applying-studying-graduating/internships-and-thesis/curricular-internships-in-italy
https://www.polito.it/en/education/applying-studying-graduating/internships-and-thesis/curricular-internship-abroad
At the end of the internship you must write a short report (maximum 10 pages) on the activity that you have carried out. The final validation of the internship and its registration in your transcript will be done by your Academic Tutor.

Extending the duration of your internship: internships have a given duration (hours) and carry a certain number of credits as specified in the Annual Personal Study Plan. You can extend the duration of your internship (number of hours) by selecting one of the options available in the field “Expected no. of hours”. You can only do this operation before the beginning of your internship and not while you are doing it. In any case, you cannot do more than 900 hours (maximum amount of hours may vary for each study course). Any request to extend the duration of an internship must be decided together with the Host Company. It MUST also be approved by a Polito faculty member (your Academic Tutor or the Internship Coordinator of your degree programme) who may reject your proposal. In this case, you need to make a new proposal and fill out a new training project. If your training project is approved, it means that the extension of your internship and the extra hours have been accepted as well. At the end of an internship with extended duration, you will see that the internship is recorded in your transcript as follows: INTERNSHIP with standard hours/credits in accordance with the rules of  your degree programme (i.e. 6 credits/150 hours) plus the annotation “curricular internship extension” with your extra hours/credits. These credits will be recorded in your transcript as credit overload (they do not count towards the 120-credits threshold required for Master’s graduation).

You are not allowed to obtain the recognition of activities that you have already carried out. The internship is considered as an activity formulated from scratch.

However, you are allowed to request the recognition of professional skills in substitution for your free choice credits. Please follow the procedure explained in the "Student Guide": free choice credits ---> other learning activities ---> other learning activities outside the University.
