Talks in the Library 2022-2023
The 7th edition of "Conversazioni in Biblioteca" (Talks in the Library) aims, like its predecessors, to bring together different areas of knowledge around issues relating to the environment, land and infrastructure.
For the 2022-2023 cycle, a guiding theme has been identified: war. The various meetings will therefore reflect on the relationship between engineering and war and the implications of this relationship on the environment and the territory. In particular, engineering has emerged as a field of knowledge and techniques based on military needs: with this cycle of conferences, we will try to question how much engineering knowledge is still linked to military knowledge and how much, instead, it has emancipated itself from it. At the same time, the question will be raised as to what kind of engineering knowledge is or would be needed to think about peace and/or alternative defence systems.
The cycle will consist of 10 meetings. Meetings are generally held in Italian. Politecnico di Torino students who attend IN PRESENCE most of the lectures will be granted 1 extra-curricular credit.
More information on the DIATI website.
As in the previous editions, a few weeks ago some young engineers from Politecnico di Torino attended the Tech tour organized by PROMETIA, the international non-profit association promoting innovation in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy for mining and recycling of raw materials.
Together with other young researchers and students coming from more than 10 different Countries around the world, they had the chance to visit several facilities in the North of Sweden.
This participation is possible thanks to the fact that Politecnico di Torino is partner of PROMETIA.
Have a look at the Tech tour report here.

New skills for the energy and ecological transition
Professor Valentina Socco was an invited speaker at the online “Energy Transition: macro-economic update & new competences” organized by the SPE Italian Section on January, 25th.
She talked about the new M.Sc. program in Georesources and Geoenergy Engineering offered by Politecnico di Torino as a result of how academia can respond to the need of new skills and competencies for the energy and ecological transition.
The job market and the industry sector are requesting engineers to have new green competences in the field of geoscience, like renewable energies and pollution mitigation, alongside with additional knowledge in data analysis and artificial intelligence and this new program is designed exactly to broad the skills of our engineers.
Professor Socco also underlined the importance for this program to be designed in Europe where commitment to the environmental problem is strong. Europe is indeed expected to have a role as a change maker into the transition, as it was with many other innovations in the past.
Her speech is available in streaming here.
