PhD at University of Guelph (Canada)
Posted on: 06/02/22
Professor Erica Pensini of University of Guelph (Canada) is offering one or more opportunity of PhD at his lab.
The Pensini lab focuses on the development of new technologies to remediate water and sites polluted with diverse contaminants, including heavy metals and hydrocarbons.
They work with natural materials to develop barriers able to prevent contaminant spreading, they investigate chemical and biological methods to degrade contaminants and they identify methods to facilitate contaminant extraction from the subsurface.
In their lab they need chemists and environmental engineers with chemistry knowledge to understand the fundamental science required for the development of new approaches to solve old environmental problems.
An example of the researches carried out in their lab is the developing of pumpable barriers using inexpensive corn proteins.
The research involved identifying methods to dissolve the corn protein (to ensure that it could be injected around the polluted areas) and then solidify it on demand (to ensure that it could trap the contaminants and prevent them from spreading in the aquifer). The mechanical properties of the material developed were studied through tensile tests (i.e., by pulling the material) and through rheology (i.e., by shearing the material). The mechanical properties of the solid material are important, because the barriers produced must be robust to impede contaminant flow.
