Expected learning outcomes of the programme
The MSc degree programme in Environmental and Land Engineering has the following strengths:

The MSc programme aims to train engineers to have a deep understanding of the theoretical and scientific aspects of environmental and land engineering, where they are able to conceive, plan, design, manage and control works, plants, systems and processes interacting with the environment and the territory.    

More specifically, the educational objectives across all three specializations (Environmental Protection, Geo-Engineering, Natural Risks and Civil Protection) are as follows:

Natural risks and Civil Protection
To provide a scientific and technical background to be able to design and implement the most appropriate technological interventions, even complex ones, of environmental protection during the usual human activities or in the case of accidents. Moreover, to share knowledge to enable the design and implementation of measures for the recovery of polluted sites and to allow the planning and management of production activities that are compatible with the environment.
To prepare students to design and implement excavation engineering interventions (surface and underground) and major works that interact with the soil and rocks. To provide technical and scientific content to solve engineering problems related to the stability of the surface and to underground excavation works, to the proper exploitation of mineral resources, the management and organization of major work construction sites that have an impact on the territory.
To provide technical and scientific preparation to be able to identify risks of floods, landslides, soil subsidence, broken levees, and to intervene by designing and creating works that can contain the water flow on the surface and underground, to stabilize slopes on the ground and walls rocky, consolidate the soil and rocks in order to eliminate the risk of landslides and soil subsidence. The specialization includes a new specific course in Civil Protection, focusing on works planning and on management of emergency related to natural instability events (landslides, floods, earthquakes).
Employment and career opportunities for graduates
The MSc in Environmental and Land Engineering is aimed at preparing technicians able to operate in the planning, design, construction and operation of even complex environmental systems, works, excavations and interventions that interact with the territory.
  

As an example we can mention:
  • the implementation of treatment plants for municipal and industrial waste-water; 
  • plants for the recycling of secondary raw materials; 
  • open and underground excavations for the construction of tunnels and other large civil and mining works; 
  • works concerning waterway flow control and maintenance of water basins, stabilization of slopes in earth and rock walls, consolidation of soils and rocks.    

MSc graduates may also deal with forecasting, prevention and protection against hazards to health, the environment and the territory with: 
  • the implementation and the use of various technical tools such as geographic information systems and monitoring networks for the acquisition and management of environmental data, environmental impact studies and environmental management systems of works, processes, systems, products, transformations of the territory's actual or forecast use; 
  • the design, implementation and management of technological measures aimed at the reduction of emissions, the disposal and recovery of waste and the reclaim of contaminated sites; of works for soil conservation and the prevention of hydraulic risks, hydro-geological and territorial instability; 
  • the preparation of Civil Protection.    

Being an Environment and Land Engineer means to possess high technical skills in cross related fields, creativity, spirit of initiative and a desire to deal daily with always new and exciting challenges.
