The Mining Engineering path
of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Petroleum and Mining Engineering is aimed at training
professionals with a multidisciplinary culture in scientific and technical aspects of mining engineering
, able to explore mineral deposits and to plan, design and manage quarries, mines, ore processing plants, systems and processes for raw materials management. These activities are carried out in order to optimize economic resources, protect the environment and ensure the safety principles of the implemented works and constructions.
The Master Course is unique in Italy and prepares future technicians in the fundamental disciplines of the mining and oil and gas sector (geology, geophysics, fluid mechanics in porous media, mining engineering and reservoir engineering, excavation engineering, well drilling and completion, treatment processes of minerals) and preparatory disciplines (rock mechanics, risk analysis and safety engineering). It is an international course delivered in English with interaction with the industry; this aspect gives to the training a particular professionalizing character of the acquired skills.
The specific professional profiles of the Specialization in “Mining Engineering” are as follows:
- PROSPECTOR ENGINEER OF ORE DEPOSITS
- MINE AND QUARRY DESIGNER ENGINEER
- MINING WORKS DIRECTOR
Graduates in Petroleum and Mining Engineering, with a Specialization in Mining Engineering, are employed mainly in mining companies, engineering and service companies
or management and regulatory bodies in the energy and mining sector
. They are in charge of both technical and organizational activities (design of quarries, mines and plants, management and control of works and processes) and fieldwork (direction of quarries, mines, mineral processing plants).
For those who have a strong vocation for research, the level of technical and scientific knowledge acquired in the M.Sc. program also allows the deepening of the acquired knowledge in international universities, through Specialization Courses or PhD courses.
The educational path is distributed over two years:
A first year
where, before facing the engineering aspects of different disciplines, all the fundamental scientific knowledge is gained. In this perspective, during the first year courses deal with the chemical and physical properties of the rocks, the petrophysical properties of mineralized rocks, the geology fundamentals and ore deposit geology, the mechanical behavior of rocks, the risk analysis theory, the raw material engineering, the techniques for geophysical exploration of ore deposits. Following, skills concerning the analysis and quantitative revision of information and data are acquired. These skills are also consolidated through targeted calculation exercises to solve problems of practical interest.
The second year
is specifically devoted to a technical and engineering education. Besides learning the definition methods of the development strategies of the deposits, according to an interdisciplinary approach, practical exercises play a role of paramount importance.
The courses plan allows graduates to enter the international Mining Sector and to master technical language and basic concepts when communicating with other technical specialists of the industrial engineering sector.
The basic preparation obtained through the M.Sc. program allows for further deepening, independently of the issues that will arise during the working life or the following specialization in a specific field, through self-study or attendance of specialized courses and seminars.
