Opening of Spazio AurorlaLAB. University in the peripheries: An urban lab of the Politecnico di Torino to regenerate Turin's peripheries.
December 11, 2019. H. 10AM, Via Cuneo 6bis

After a one year long work, the AuroraLAB space will be opened to mark the presence of the Politecnico di Torino in a space made available by the District 7 in Via Cuneo 6bis.
This is a research-action pilot project, between teaching (learning by doing), (responsible) research, and local action (co-design), with two main aims:
  • to offer students a formative an integrated and multi-disciplinary experience through "out of the classroom" learning, interacting directly with actors and within places of urban territorial transformation;
  • to close the gap between university and territory and to develop shared initiatives and projects, promoting research-action oriented initiatives with an integrated approach to urban regeneration.

From November 22 to 24, 2019, the didactic workshop "Narration of the city: a multidisciplinary path of knowledge between historical sources and media narrative" will be held in Padua and Venice. The workshop has been organised in the framework of the activities of the "Comparative City History" course of the PGUA curriculum of the MSc in Planning.

The photo exhibition "UNTITLED: Torino" will be held at the Castello del Valentino on November 25, 27, 28 and 29 2019.
The exhibition is based on the research "Untitled. Hybrid spaces of contemporary cities" and presents images of urban voids, dismissed factories, recent urban transformations that challenge the idea of planning as a discipline that works with predefinite categories.

In the framework of the Studio "Programmi integrati di sviluppo locale e rigenerazione urbana" (MSc in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning) a cycle of seminar has been organised on the topic of urban regeneration, taking into account national and international cases. A series of seminars will be organised in the framework of the courses "Geografia urbana e territoriale" and "Sociologia dell’ambiente e del territorio" of the MSc in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning.
The series, "Geografie dell'abitare ai margini” is centred around the issue of the right to the city - the inclusive city, the provision of decent housing, reflections on access to public services and on quality of life - as it is referred to in the New Urban Agenda of the United Nations (Quito,  2016).

On July 12, 2019, the AESOP - Association of European Schools of Planning has awarded the "Certificate of Quality" to our Bachelor in Territorial, Urban, Landscape and Environmental Planning.
The Certificate has already been given to our Master level programme in 2016.
The award is not assigned with a "raking list" approach, rather it is given to university programmes that satisfy the European quality standards for training of planners, as recognised by the AESOP Charter, as well as a concrete internationalisation of the teaching activities.

The call for selection for "Polito 4 Impact - Percorso per i Giovani Talenti", a.y. 2019/2020, has been launched. The call is for bachelor level students and 5 positions are for students of the BSc in Territorial, Urban, Environment and Landscape Planning.
Activities will refer to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030 and, among those, the SDG11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable). SGD11 characterises our programmes and teaching activities, thus making of the Percorso a further chance to improve the students' curricula.
Activities will start from the second year (July) and deadline to participate is September 23, 2019.

From October 2019 and until January 2020 the workshop "Rischio territoriale e patrimonio culturale.  Pianificazione della prevenzione e rigenerazione del patrimonio culturale diffuso di interesse religioso" will take place. The workshop, organised by the School of Planning and Design of the Politecnico di Torino, will involve students in activities related to risk prevention and religious cultural heritage valorisation in a perspective of planning at the territorial scale. Governance strategies will be developed in synergy with related local communities.

The Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning (DIST) has organized an international joint workshop with the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Maryland as part of the Master's Degree Program in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning. The educational objective is to study methods, tools and indexes aimed at the sustainability of cities and territories. The teaching staff is a multidisciplinary group of three departments (DIST, DENERG and DIATI) of the Politecnico di Torino, plus a professor from the University of Maryland. The proposed workshop is organized with 10 days of seminar activities in English on the sustainability of the building heritage and transport infrastructures. The program includes 18 hours of theoretical lessons, 12 hours of exercise activities and 35 hours of guided tours in January 3rd-11th 2020 (3CFU).

On September 11-13, 2019, the field-trip "Pianificazione Strategica per la Città Resiliente. Approcci, Progetti e Innovazioni nella Città di Copenaghen” will take place to strengthen the competences of future planners. Their skills, in fact, need to be up to date for a profession that requires to work with human transformation of the environment in a resilient perspective.
The field-trip is addressed to 10 selected students among those enrolled to the 2018-2019 academic year of the MSc in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning. 3 ECTS will be recognised to the participants.

Between May and October 2019 the didactic workshop "Rigenerare lo spazio pubblico: standard, suolo e servizi ecosistemici" will be held (in Italian).

The workshop is mainly addressed to students of the Schools of Planning and Design, Architecture, Engineering for the Environment and Territory, Civil Engineering, Building Engineering but it may welcome students coming from other universities.

Call for participation to the field trip "Berlin: on the transformations of the public space" (8-12.05.2019)

Spunto Collettivo, a students' organisation, is organising a field trip in Berlin from the 8th to the 12th of May 2019 (4 overnight stays included).
The theme that has been chosen for the field trip is public space, understood as a space for interpersonal relationships and for sociality, characterized by several levels of accessibility and able to adapt to different uses over time.

Second Day of the Laboratorio del Cammino: Camminare in territori vulnerabili

The day starts with a seminar (h. 9:30-13:00, Room 10V) in which those that took part to the "Sicilia coast to coast" summer school will present results from their researches. In the afternoon an exhibition will be opened in Room 4VM (h. 16:30-18:00): words, drawings, images of the summer school will be used to understand participants' points of view on the vulnerability of the Sicilian territory. On September 21, 2018, a seminar titled "Una nuova prospettiva per lo sviluppo sostenibile. Dalle comunità energetiche agli NZEB" will be held at the Energy Center. The upcoming adoption of the nZeb Standard (EU Directive 31/10) will interest all public buildings since January 1, 2019, and all buildings after two more years. The seminar (held in Italian) will see researchers, representatives of institutions, planners, and designers debate on plans, policies, experimentations that are interesting opportunities and experiences.

Joint Workshop in Tokyo with Hosei University and Sci_Arc (US), July 2018, 16-21

The Joint Workshop "Challenging the Urban Fabric", promoted by the School of Planning and Design of the DIST department and the School of Architecture and Design of the DAD department of the Politecnico di Torino together with the Hosei University (Center for Edo-Tokyo Studies, Future City Laboratory Tokyo) and Sci_Arc from US, has seen six Polito students interact with their Japanese and US colleagues.
The Italian professors taking part to the JW were Claudia Cassatella and Marco Santangelo, from DIST, and Nicola Russi and Mauro Volpiano, from DAD.
Results from the JW will be published later in 2018 and available on the universities' websites.

On June 22, 2018, h. 11:30-13:00 in the Vigliano Room the seminar "Exploring the memory of disaster today for World heritage tomorrow. A five phases glocal approach" by prof. Kobayashi will be presented.
The seminar will be about a study and a proposal linking advanced planning for disaster prevention with landscape architecture. The presentation is based on Kobayashi’s experience with recovery and advance planning for Hanshin (Kobe) and Rikuzentakata (Iwate), in Japan.

The Joint Workshop CHALLENGING THE URBAN FABRIC. RETHINKING URBAN INTERFACES IN TOKYO is promoted by the Politecnico di Torino (DAD and DIST department), from Hosei University in Tokyo, and from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). The Joint Workshop, dedicated to master level students, will take place in Tokyo from July 16 to 20, 2018.

"Pre-visioni sul Mai. Progetti e prospettive a confronto" is an exhibition that collects works on the Luigi Einaudi Campus (CLE) and surrounding areas of students of the MSc in Architecture for Sustainable Design and of the BSc in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning.
The planners' contribution focused on the campus and its relationship with the district. Planning students involved were from the Studio "Programmi integrati di sviluppo locale e rigenerazione urbana" and from the "Sociologia Urbana" course.

This Seminar on brownfield revitalisation is the occasion for comparing US and EU processes of regeneration from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
Prof. Tzoumis, past- Fulbright at Politecnico and currently Professor at the DePaul University (IL), will illustrate her applied experiences in environmental policies in US. Starting from her background in US Department of energy, US Senate, and national labs.

On Thursday the 1st and Friday the 2nd of February 2018 the international symposium "Urban Landscapes in High Density Cities" will be held in Torino. The symposium is a joint event organised by the Politecnico di Torino and the National University of Singapore.
On Thursday, the 14th of December 2017, at 4pm in room 7VM, the seminar "Gli strumenti di finanziamento pubblico a servizio delle politiche di sviluppo locale" will be held.
The meeting will see the participation of L. Muller and P. Romero, President and Director of the consultancy Chintana srl (www.chintana.it), a firm that works in the field of territorial planning and local development.
The implementation of social and economic development initiatives, in a moment of recession, calls for local authorities to work according a programming rationale to get European and national funds. The capacity to access those funds is based on planning related competences and instruments:
- territorial analysis
- strategic programming
- debate and cooperation

Chintana will present cases and experiences related to such competences and instruments.

On Thursday, the 23rd of November, at 4PM in room  7VM, in the  framework of the course "Mobilità / Sistemi insediativi" (2nd year of the BSc in Territorial, Urban, Landscape and Environmental Planning), a seminar has been organised to present the new Regional Plan of Mobility and Transport (to be approved by the Piedmont Region).
Arch. Olga Quero, of the Transport Planning Sector of the Piedmont Region, and Arch. Guido Baschenis, of the Territory and Landscape Sector of the Piedmont Region, will present the process that has brought to the Regional Plan and its coherence with the Regional Territorial Plan and the Regional Landscape Plan.

Two seminars will be organised in the framework of the Erasmus + initiatives promoted by prof. Cassatella for the internationalisation of the School of Planning and Design:
  • on the 31st of October, 2017, "Planning for post-industrial urban green quality", with professors Knorr-Siedow and Remmert of the BTU, Cottbus Senftenberg (Germany);
  • on the 9th of November, 2017, "Participatory planning and modern GIS approaches in landscape planning", with prof. Slamova of the TU, Zvolen (Slovakia).

Conference: Energia e clima, la chiave per il futuro. Le costruzioni in legno (in Italian)

A.Y. 2017-2018: Interdisciplinary Welcome Week

On Monday the 2nd of October the first teaching period of the new cycle of the BSc in Territorial, Urban, Landscape and Environmental Planning will start.

In the framework of the European Heritage Days 2017 (23-24 September 2017), promoted by the European Council and the Italian Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities and Tourism on the theme “Culture and Nature”, the works or students of the Landscape and Territorial Planning Studio of the Politecnico di Torino (MSc in Territorial, Urban, Landscape and Environmental Planning, a.y. 2016/2017) will be presented. The exhibition and related seminar are titled “Cultura e Natura”, the Archaeological Site of Libarna.

In the framework of the joint initiatives of Politecnico di Torino and National University of Singapore (joint project "Socio-Ecological Assessment of Urban Landscapes: a Comparative Study") two seminars are organised:

1) "Urban Landscapes & Urban Parks: Turin as Case Study from Interdisciplinary Perspectives", to be held on Monday the 5th of June, h. 09 AM in Vigliano Room, to debate the role of ecological, social, cultural and economic dimensions of urban landscapes in Turin and its metropolitan region.

2) "Socio-Ecological Assessment of Urban Landscapes", to be held on Thursday the 8th of June, h. 09 AM in Vigliano Room,  with the participation of professors Puay Yok Tan and Jessica Cook of the National University of Singapore. 

Both seminars are organised within the course “Urban Landscapes: Trends, Approaches, and Planning Tools” of the PhD programme in Urban and Re­gional Development of the Politecnico di Torino.

CAREER PERSPECTIVES: First event

On the 12th of December 2016 the first event to have our students to meet private firms interested in offering job opportunities has been held. The first company has been LIDL, one of the major retail company in Europe (LIDL Italia won the prize for Best Large Workplaces in 2016).
93 students took part to the meeting, many of them also involved in the following interviews for the position of Junior Real Estate Developer.
