Educational Goals

The Master of Science curriculum in Electronic Engineering gives the student a deeper and wider knowledge of topics addressed during the Bachelor. It builds competences ranging from technology to circuit and system design, from algorithmic aspects to those related to implementation of special applications.

A graduated with a Master in Electronic Engineering can operate at the highest levels in research, design and development, where it is required not only to use the most advanced components and methodologies, but also to create new ones, in order to obtain innovative applications or with the best cost/performance ratio. He or she has therefore the capability to manage complex projects with performances at the limit of technological feasibility, to develop new components and specific subsystems as integrated circuits or complete System-on-Chip on silicon or other technologies, and to use and develop innovative methods and procedures.

Educational Path

Lectures in Master degree are in Italian and English, and a student can choose a curriculum in English only or with a majority of Italian classes. Master curriculum includes a group of mandatory courses, and a wide range of optional courses. These courses allow a student to study in details different fields of electronics, as detailed below.

At the end of Master each student, under the supervision of a professor, prepares and defends a thesis (written in Italian or English). The work for the Master thesis can also be carried out in a company or at a foreign University. For the Master it is possible to attend courses abroad, within the frame of agreements with foreign universities, achieving joint or double degrees.

The first year of Master of Science in Electronic Engineering includes some "compulsory choice" courses, organized into six groups. These courses are designed to align the basic knowledge on various subjects of Electronics, Measurements, Electromagnetic Fields, as required in specialized courses later. Five groups include a course in Italian and one English, the sixth a wider range of courses only in English.

The curriculum must include one and only one course from each teaching group.
Each curriculum proposes one course from each group; this should be used as advice, not as a constraint. Choosing the "proposed" course builds a coherent overall path, but you can also insert the other course from the same group, e.g. because of language preference.

The first part includes the general scheme describing mandatory courses, and all tables listing elective classes.
The second section includes, in alphabetic order, the programme syllabus of every elective curricula, in which all mandatory classes have been appropriately suggested and all elective courses have been fixed to help the student to select his own educational path.

All students have to complete their own educational path by including one
entire programme syllabus selected among all elective curricula reported after
the general scheme.
To set-up a part-time educational path, it is necessary to follow a specific

Devices and Technologies for Integrated Electronics and Optoelectronics

This curriculum aims to train designers of both digital and analog systems, as well as integrated optoelectronics with emphasis on technological processes and devices design, including innovative areas of technology such as organic electronics. Training also extends to knowledge and practical use of advanced CAD tools (so called technology CAD) to design new technologies, devices and systems based on Silicon, including highly scaled devices, and on other semiconductors and organic materials or polymers for optoelectronic and nanoelectronic devices.

Electronic micro and nanosystems

Evolution of microtechnologies led to a size scaling in devices and systems down to the nanostructure level. This elective curriculum aims to provide knowledge and skills to understand and design micro and nanostructures requiring specific criteria of analysis, design and implementation. Emphasis is given to the system level aspect point of view, providing the required bases on technology and modeling proceeding up to the construction of a complete system, starting from the micro or nano-system to the control of interfaces with the external world.
First part of this curriculum covers technologies and devices, also including non-electronic parts. It is followed by micro and nanoscale design courses dealing with specific application areas such as mechanics, optics, radiofrequency, chemistry, biology, medicine. At the end of this curriculum, applications are presented which have a comprehensive approach to the analysis and design of micro and nano systems.

Embedded systems

This curriculum gives the Master EE the expertise to design and optimize embedded systems, by integrating system and application aspects. Key topics are the organization of programmable hardware architectures for embedded systems, their software and hardware interfaces, and the implementation techniques in hardware platforms, both integrated and multichip. These topics are supplemented by courses about operating systems, methods for description, modeling and optimized programming, which allow an effective design and use of embedded systems.

Microelectronics

This curriculum provides the students with skills and knowledge required to design ICs for a broad spectrum of applications. Topics include solid skills in designing ICs in analog, digital and RF domains, including also power management sections. Microelectronics curriculum focuses on teaching state-of-the-art design and optimization of digital microelectronic circuits and memories, of important analog building blocks, of RF and power circuits, starting from initial design to final layout. Important issues covered by this curriculum are the coexistence on the same IC of systems belonging to different domains and methodologies of CAD for physical design. Student can choose among some elective courses on device design, integrated optical systems and architecture of complex digital systems.

Radiofrequency Design


This curriculum prepares Electrical engineers with specific skills and expertise in the fields of high frequency analog electronics, from radiofrequency to microwaves, millimetric waves and including also the high speed A-to-D and D-to-A conversion techniques. This sector experienced during the last years a strong growth which allowed the widespread use in consumer electronics of system using microwaves, such as mobile communication systems and WLAN. Such systems up to few years ago were limited to very special and high cost applications. A key aspect in this curriculum is the link between circuits (analog and RF blocks), integrated technologies (RF CMOS, compound semiconductor technologies) and applications in communication, aerospace and automotive fields. Particular attention is devoted to CAD techniques for high frequency circuit design.

Some courses of this curriculum are taught in English.

Design of Power and Analog Electronics

This curriculum gives to students of Master Degree the opportunity to increase their expertise about analysis and design of modern analog and power front-end and back-end circuits.
These circuits are required for conditioning and acquisition of signals generated by sensors, Microsystems and MEMs, for sending information via wired connections, and to drive actuators of various types. Topics taught in this curriculum allow the Master graduated to work as hardware designer of both conventional electronic modules and of systems integrated on silicon, comprising analog and power sections. This class of ¿System on Chip¿ (SOC) is nowadays widely used in transportation systems like cars, railways, avionics, and in industrial and telecommunications facilities.

Electronic Systems

Electronic Systems curriculum provides the Master EE with the skills required to design digital electronic systems spanning on different levels of integrations, from board design to IC design. These skills are needed in the entrepreneurial world, in areas like process control, special processing and embedded systems and customer circuits. Courses are focused on system design and building technologies, including innovative techniques and their applications, from system to architecture and microarchitecture, targeting performances, robustness and energy reduction. Topics include design techniques based on co-design, and optimization algorithms, taking into account problems arising from integration of hardware and software. Students can include elective courses on reliability, programming languages, operating systems and special applications like those found in avionics and space electronics.

Wireless Systems Design

This curriculum prepares designers of electronic systems for telecommunications and for the telecommunication industry in general, covering both wireless communications, as used by cellular and satellite systems, home automation, wireless LANs, broadcasting, and communication systems based on physical connections, as systems using optical fibers, LAN, WAN, automotive electronics¿
Emphasis is given to system and to design of devices and functional units, using integrated components with varying complexity, ranging from devices used in amplifiers, to the fully integrated radio system. Covered topics include Software Radio Architectures, microwave and RF electronics, analog and digital electronics, design methods (co-design, testing¿) Particular attention is paid to system and interdisciplinary topics, such as power management, electromagnetic compatibility, production. This curriculum includes substantial time for laboratory and CAD.
