Qual è, oggi, il ruolo dell'architettura, rispetto al degrado della città, del territorio, del paesaggio? "Viviamo in un momento di crisi" è il mantra che ogni giorno si sente ripetere ovunque e da chiunque. Un bombardamento mediatico di cui ora siamo diventati dipendenti. E questa crisi, economica e sociale, si è diffusa in tutti i campi, in tutte le discipline, in ogni aspetto della nostra esistenza. Sentiamo questi temi di crisi anche nell'architettura; anzi, forse l'architettura è uno dei campi in cui si sono registrati i primi segni di questa difficoltà.
L'architettura, come mezzo per costruire spazi pubblici e luoghi di qualità per vivere ancora meglio, negli ultimi anni è stata spesso offuscata da un diffuso desiderio di spettacolo, che ha prodotto oggetti a volte straordinari, ma completamente dissociati dal contesto urbano e ambientale, che hanno creato una rottura netta con il senso profondo del progetto e il legame con i territori, gli abitanti e la storia.
Il corso "La cultura della città" intende incrementare e approfondire gli studi sulle città del XXI secolo, partendo da una bibliografia di riferimento e cercando di aprire un dibattito su nuovi temi e riflessioni sul mondo in cui abitiamo, viviamo e lavoriamo. Un mondo che forse ha bisogno di nuove ricerche, per essere inteso e compreso prima di essere trasformato.
Today what is the role of architecture, compared to the degradation of the city, the territory, the landscape?
"We are living in a time of crisis" is the mantra that every day feels repeat anywhere and by anyone. A media bombardment to which we have now become addicted. And this crisis, by economic and social, has spread in all fields, in all disciplines, in every aspect of our existence. We hear these themes of crisis also in architecture; indeed, perhaps the architecture is one of the fields where the first signs of this difficulty were recorded.
The architecture, as a means to build public spaces and quality places to live even better, in recent years often has been tarnished by widespread desire for spectacle, which produced objects sometimes extraordinary, but completely dissociated from the urban and environmental context, which have created a clean break with the deep sense of the project and the link to the territories, inhabitants and history.
The course "The culture of the city" aims to increase and deepen the studies on the cities of the XXI century, starting from a bibliography of reference and trying to open a debate on new topics and reflections on the world in which we live, dwell and work. A world that probably needs new researches to be meant and understood before being transformed.
Nessun prerequisito; è comunque preferibile che gli studenti siano in possesso di una Laurea Magistrale in Architettura (classe LM-4), o in Architettura del Paesaggio (classe LM-3), o anche in classi LM-10, LM-11, LM-48.
No prerequisites; it is however preferable that students are in possession of a Master’s degree in Architecture (class LM-4), or in Landscape Architecture (class LM-3), or even in classes LM-10, LM-11, LM-48.
Il corso si articolerà su quattro lezioni, ciascuna delle quali seguita da una discussione, e un seminario finale:
1. La “quinta dimensione” dell’architettura
2. Riflessioni a partire da Lewis Mumford (The culture of cities)
3. Identità e appartenenza
4. La fragilità (della terra e del tempo in cui viviamo) e la resilienza
5. Seminario finale
Le lezioni ex-cathedra del docente saranno accompagnate da interventi da parte di studiosi che, presentando le loro ricerche più recenti, ne metteranno in evidenza metodologie e pratiche. Nel Seminario finale gli studenti saranno invitati a discutere alcuni testi scelti dalla bibliografia proposta all’inizio del corso.
The course will consist of four lessons, each followed by a discussion, and a final seminar:
1. The "fifth dimension" of architecture
2. Reflections from Lewis Mumford (The culture of cities)
3. Identity and belonging
4. The fragility (of the earth and of the time in which we live) and the resilience
5. Final seminar
The ex-cathedra lectures by the professor will be accompanied by interventions by scholars who, presenting their latest research, will highlight methodologies and practices. During the final seminar the students will be invited to discuss some texts chosen from the bibliography proposed at the beginning of the course.
