The course aims at providing principles of Earthquake engineering and seismic retrofit of structures with particular attention to buildings. After an introduction to the dynamic of systems, the course will present issues related with the seismic response of structures. Principles and procedures for the acquisition of an adequate level of knowledge of existing structures through structural surveys and inspections will be analysed. The course will also introduce nonlinear structural analysis and modelling of reinforced concrete, steel and masonry structures under dynamic loads and the approaches to assess their performance before and after retrofitting interventions using traditional and innovative techniques.

Students will be introduced to the dynamic and seismic response of elementary structures, multi-modal response spectrum analysis in accordance national and international codes through practice lessons and exercises. Application to the seismic design and evaluation of safety level of an existing building before and after strengthening or retrofitting of existing structures will be carried out within a specific coursework to be worked in group.

Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilitą o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unitą Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione pił idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.

The competencies acquired by the students will be evaluated through an oral discussion. To be eligible to take the exam, students must complete the coursework made in group assigned during the course within the date of the exam. The final examination is intended to assess all learning outcomes starting from the coursework that will weight up to one third of the total score; however an insufficient grade on this part will automatically result in failing the exam.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
