At the same time in the introduction the addressed problem will be defined, in particular: why we need to decarbonize the transport sector, why different solutions have to be considered for the road, aviation and maritime segments, and why the LCA-based tools are a needed to assess the potential savings and compare the technologies. The environmental impact of transport sector and the need for decarbonisation
In this lesson the three main polluting segments of the transport sector will be described, with a peculiar focus on their energy demand and related impacts. The types of environmental impacts will be defined, with the goal of better define the frame for the decarbonisation actions. The current available technologies for deacarbonising each sector will be briefly presented, with a clear focus on their potential for reducing GHGs emissions. The definition of “hard-to-abate” sector will be presented, with the goal of helping in understanding the existing technical barriers for the various options. Existing LCA based methodologies for estimating the GHG reduction of alternative fuels and powertrains
In this lesson the LCA-based tools will be presented in details. A clear definition for Well-To-Wheels methodologies will be given. The difference of the current used approaches with respect to a full LCA will be clarified, also by means of examples. Alternative fuels and powertrains couples will be compared, with respect to their potential for reducing the GHG emissions. Existing applications for such methodology will be presented, in particular recalling relevant examples from the EU legislation for transport (Fuel Quality Directive, REDII and others). The JEC v5 WTW study will be used as base document, but other relevant case studies will be proposed from the DG-MOVE LCA study (2020), for the light duty vehicles. Finally, the aviation CORSIA methodology for assessing the GHG saving potential of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels will be presented.
