Understanding Diversity - Genoveva Vargas Solar (1,5 hrs) Diversity is a critical step towards achieving an environment with varied perspectives, and inclusion allows those perspectives to be shared, heard, and valued. The trick is that diversity is a tangible, quantifiable metric. At the same time, inclusion requires sophisticated methods for taking the community's pulse and engaging with community members to express their unique experiences within the collective culture safely. In defining suitable ways to promote diversity, it is essential to consider it a multiperspective concept. Still, it denotes a social interaction project of perception on how collectivities should be designed (working groups at university, organisations within companies, and any human group). The project of diversity specifies the way people should get together to share their pieces of knowledge and expertise to achieve a common objective. They should understand that they are targeting a common benefit that impacts other collectivities. The more diverse the group is the more material and immaterial value they can achieve. The first objective of this seminar will be get acquainted with the different perspectives of diversity and to introduce the keys to be used to put in practice inclusion policies that will materialize a diversity project. The second objective is to give students the theory and hands-on tools to let them decide whether they should practice diversity, under which conditions and seeking for which collective benefits. Policy for inclusion - Ilaria Madama (1,5 hrs) The goal of the seminar is to introduce students to the analysis of family policy from a comparative perspective, focusing on both national and EU level developments in this field. More precisely, the main objectives of the seminar are to enable students to acquire key concepts and tools for the study of family and work-life balance policies in the European multi-level setting, and knowledge about how the different institutional designs may affect gender relations and labour market outcomes. To this end, the seminar will provide an overview of the patterns of family policy spending and labour market outcomes across EU countries and assess recent developments in the most important family policy provisions, covering transfers, services and leaves. Designing an inclusive workplace - Luca Falzea (1,5 hrs) Aim of this unit is to help students develop skills for designing an inclusive workplace, recognising their biases and practicing empathy when interacting within the workplace environment. Students will be briefly introduced to two case studies, coming from empirical research, about inclusive workplaces with particular regards to the LGBTQIA+ population. Through the study of these cases, students will be able to learn good practices to create an inclusive environment in the workplace and how to practice an empathetic leadership. The second part of the course will be dedicated to role-play activities that will help the students face their biases and, through discussion in the classroom, learn effective methods to successfully take in account these biases and stereotypes when interacting with others and when practicing leadership. Design for inclusion and accessibility - Daniela Bosia and Marco Bozzola (3 hrs) This unit aims to focus on the fundamental principles, methods, and practices in inclusive projects, with particular regard to architecture and design. Students will be able to understand the different dimensions of accessibility that contribute to defining what is required in planning services, spaces, and products. The main topics are: - Introduction to the concepts of accessibility and usability and their interdisciplinary nature; - Laws and methodologies for an inclusive approach in architectural planning; - How to understand users and their needs; - Planning inclusive and multisensory spaces; - Approaches to accessibility: Universal Design, Design for all, Design for each, inclusive design; - Dimension of accessibility: physical, social, cultural; - Heritage and cultural accessibility: Intercultural design approach; - Design and accessible communication. Diversity in research projects - Alessandro Mantelero (1.5 hrs) This unit deals in broad terms with the role that diversity can play in meeting the ethical requirements for EU-funded research projects. The impact of a diversity approach on the use of data for research purposes and on the involvement of human beings in research will be discussed. A case-based method will be used to address these issues.
