The Challenge@PoliTo_By Students are innovative teaching activities carried out within the spaces of the Politecnico di Torino. The Challenge@PoliTo_By Students comprises innovative teaching activities conducted at Politecnico di Torino. It plays a vital role in PoliTo's strategy to foster innovative education and entrepreneurial culture among students. Master's students can propose their own innovative ideas that address problems related to a predefined macro theme set by the University. These activities aim to support early-stage ideas and equip students with the necessary fundamentals to develop their business ventures. The process: PoliTo selects a macro topic, up to 30 master’s students are divided into multidisciplinary teams and work, compete and develop their own solutions. The activities are carried out in an experimental educational laboratory: the CLIK - Connection Lab & Innovation Kitchen. During the discussion phase at the CLIK lab, students can experiment and practice what they have learned during their lectures in an informal and multidisciplinary environment that promotes the spirit of creativity and collaboration. Challenge@PoliTo_by Students “LIVING WITH NATURAL RISKS – Together for safety” The Topic Landslides, floods, fires and avalanches are among the major natural hazards having a great impact on the socioeconomic framework of the world. Changes in environmental conditions, due to the growth of the population, land-use intensification and industrial development, have the potential to increase the natural risk in many world regions. Moreover, climate change is expected to alter, for example, precipitation patterns having consequences for the frequency and distribution of natural risks. Thus, there is an emerging appeal for developing new common policies and strategies to reduce the impact of these phenomena, as well as to make the communities aware and part of the reality they live in. The Challenge The purpose of the challenge is to design and shape the future of natural risks awareness, prevention and mitigation with a scientific and/or playful tool. Students will focus on one or more natural hazards (landslides, floods, fires, avalanches) and face the challenge involving the following aspects: - Communication: population, school, formation, information, what and how, awareness, participation, preparedness, empowerment; - Prevention: monitoring, identification, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data; - Mitigation: smart structures, warning, maintenance, efficiency, deterioration, environmental impact. Teams are supposed to: • retrieve stakeholders’ requests and interests and perform a market analysis; • define system architecture and the dedicated products, starting from those available on the market; • increase social awareness, acceptance and engagement on these risk assessments and, if possible, promote citizens participation in the Challenge activities.

The goal is to engage students in learning initiatives that effectively bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired and the practical skills necessary for collaborative teamwork in a professional setting. Entrepreneurial Culture: Promote the Entrepreneurial culture/behavior on the PoliTo Students. Multidisciplinary Teams: Collaborate in a complex and multidisciplinary context. Information research: Retrieval, Data collection and Utilization of information to support teamwork activities. Hard Skills: Put into practice what they have learned during their lectures to solve a practical problem. Soft Skills: Teamwork under conditions close to a real business environment, self-assessment and work organization. At the end of this activity, students will be better equipped to thrive in multidisciplinary team environments, a skill highly sought after by companies. They will possess the ability to analyze real world problems with a holistic approach, considering both technical and market aspects.

The Challenges last one semester, corresponding to 14 weeks. Those relating to the second teaching period start in March and last until the end of June 2024. During the activities, students must work in multidisciplinary teams supported by a group of tutors, coming from PoliTo and external partners, with complementary backgrounds and competencies, and supervised by prof. Marina Pirulli (DISEG) and prof. Daniele Peila (DIATI). Every team will self-organize its own working time and methodology. They will dedicate approximately 1.5 hours per week, with the support of mentors, either in the CLIK Lab, a similar space, or remotely.

The event will take place at CLIK Lab (Connection Lab and Innovation Kitchen), located in the central building of the Politecnico di Torino (Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24), in a similar space or remotely, with the following schedule: ● Kick-Off & Team Formation: the supervisor and the tutors will conduct a session on the Challenge issues, including the Team Formation and Team Building phases to establish multidisciplinary teams. A joint meeting of 2 days will be held. ● Problem Analysis and Idea Creation: Teams will have two weeks to analyze the problem in detail. A team of mentors will provide support through weekly meetings. ● Idea Presentation – 1st Work Progress: each team will present the problem and their proposed solution through a pitch. This will be a half-day joint meeting. ● Prototyping and Development: Teams will meet weekly at CLIK (or a similar space or remotely) to collaborate with mentors who will support the project's development. This phase will span 11 weeks of teamwork. ● Two Mid-Check Presentations – 2nd and 3rd Work Progress: two half-day meetings will be dedicated to discussing work progress during the Prototyping and Development phase ● Final Presentation: at the end of the 14th week, teams will present their projects through a pitch. This will be a half-day joint meeting. Every team will have the flexibility to self-organize their working timeframe and methodology. However, they will be required to allocate approximately 1.5 hours per week, with the support of mentors, either in the CLIK Lab, a similar space, or remotely. During the Challenge, teams are expected to submit the following deliverables: - Three presentations (i.e., PPTs) for Work Progress: these pitches will explain the outcomes achieved and outline the next steps of the project during work progress meetings. - One monthly report: a report describing the outcomes achieved and outlining the next steps will be submitted monthly. - One presentation for the Final meeting: this final pitch will be presented during the concluding presentation to provide an overview of the entire project. - One final report: a comprehensive final report on the entire project will be submitted. A standard form will be provided for this purpose. Please note that the outlined structure serves as an example and may be subject to modifications throughout the course of the Challenge.
