Mobility requires safe transport systems such as rail- and road tunnels. This course aims to present the basic concepts for road- and rail tunnel safety and legal requirements but will have a strong focus on real tunnel projects that will be presented as case studies. In Italy and Austria, the major share of the European tunnel system exists. Hence, the topic of tunnel safety is of special interest in these countries. Researchers at PoliTo and TUG focus on tunnel safety. As members of the Unite! network the project team started a collaboration in teaching and research. This joint online course is the starting point of the teaching activities, which in the long term should lead to joint Master's and PHD programs in the field of tunnel operation/safety. The Italian and the Austrian industries have reported the need for such programs.

The prerequisites that students should possess concern industrial plants and industrial engineering topics. Some rudiments of technical physics could be exploited and expanded upon.
