Il Corso di laurea magistrale in Architettura per il Restauro e la Valorizzazione del Patrimonio intende formare una figura di Architetto con competenze nell'ambito del patrimonio architettonico e paesaggistico, dovendo rispondere all'urgenza della tutela e del restauro, con particolare attenzione alle situazioni di rischio e di sostenibilità, oltre che alle strategie di conoscenza e di accesso al patrimonio culturale. Per patrimonio s'intende quell'insieme di testimonianze aventi valore di civiltà. L'oggetto degli studi è, quindi, la totalità del patrimonio architettonico e urbano, diffuso e concentrato, antico e moderno, ambientale e paesaggistico. L'obiettivo è la sua conservazione, valorizzazione, gestione, promozione, attraverso un articolato e complesso percorso progettuale che vuole integrare le irriproducibili valenze culturali dei beni con le aggiornate ragioni economiche e sociali del loro contesto di inserimento; ovunque i beni architettonici e paesaggistici esprimono l'unicità del rapporto architettura-cultura-territorio.
In tale ottica il corso di Storia dell'architettura e della città è volto alla formazione di architetti con un maturo senso critico atto ad analizzare il rapporto tra città, territorio, paesaggio e con una conoscenza approfondita dei fenomeni e dei processi che hanno caratterizzato nella storia le costruzioni, le città e i luoghi, oggi da conservare, tutelare e valorizzare.
Sulla base delle conoscenze acquisite nella laurea triennale, lo studente sarà accompagnato a un approccio critico e all'uso corretto delle fonti per la ricerca e l'analisi critica dei beni architettonici e ambientali.
Graduates of the Master of Science in Architecture Heritage Preservation and Enhancement are architects with particular expertise in architectural and landscape heritage. Heritage encompasses all aspects of cultural legacy which is passed on. The focus on strategies of knowledge and access to cultural heritage equips our graduates to respond to the urgent need to protect and restore, with particular attention to sustainability and situations of risk.
The object of study is therefore architectural and urban heritage, which includes unique examples as well as systems. It can be ancient or modern and may also concern the environment or landscape. The objective is conservation, enhancement, management and promotion, achieved through a complex planning process that seeks to place the inestimable cultural values of buildings and landscapes within the updated context of their economic and social characteristics. Architectural and landscape heritage expresses the uniqueness of the relationship between architecture, culture and territory.
In this perspective, History of Architecture and the City aims to give students a mature critical sense of the relationship between architecture, city, territory and landscape and a thorough knowledge of the processes that have characterized buildings, cities and places throughout history. Today these are places to preserve, protect and enhance.
Based on work covered on the three-year degree, students will be encouraged to have a critical approach and make appropriate use of primary and secondary sources for research and analysis of architectural and environmental heritage.
Gli studenti in questo corso acquisiranno conoscenze riguardanti in particolare:
- La maturazione di un approccio critico nella lettura dei paesaggi storici della modernità europea ed extraeuropea;
- La capacità di leggere la storia dell’architettura e della città riconoscendo l’intreccio reciproco tra diverse scale;
- Lo studio critico delle fonti (materiali, documentarie, visive, ecc.) della ricerca storica e del loro uso e interpretazione;
- La capacità di muoversi all’interno di diverse stagioni della storiografia architettonica sull’Ottocento;
- La capacità di giungere a una comprensione articolata del rapporto tra l’evoluzione della ricerca storica e il riconoscimento sociale di alcuni oggetti storici come facenti parte di un “patrimonio”.
Tali conoscenze verranno acquisite nell'ambito del corso attraverso diversi tipi di attività che svilupperanno diversi tipi di competenze: lezioni ex cathedra, studio individuale, esercizi di ricerca specifici, esercizi di scrittura e di presentazione pubblica, discussioni seminariali, ecc.
Gli studenti matureranno capacità critiche e interpretative sui temi e metodi specifici della storia dell'architettura e della città come ambito disciplinare autonomo dotato di strumenti propri e capace al tempo stesso di dialogare con le discipline e le tecniche di trasformazione del paesaggio costruito.
Students in this course will gain knowledge about in particular:
- The maturation of a critical approach in the reading of historical landscapes of European and extra-European modernity;
- The ability to read the history of architecture and the city recognizing the mutual interweaving of different scales;
- The critical study of the sources (materials, documentaries, visual, etc.) of historical research and their use and interpretation;
- The ability to move within different seasons of architectural historiography in the nineteenth century;
- The ability to reach an articulated understanding of the relationship between the evolution of historical research and the social recognition of some historical objects as part of a "heritage".
This knowledge will be acquired within the course through different types of activities that will develop different types of skills: ex cathedra lessons, individual study, specific research exercises, writing and public presentation exercises, seminar discussions, etc..
Students will develop critical and interpretative skills on the specific themes and methods of the history of architecture and the city as an autonomous disciplinary field equipped with its own tools and capable at the same time of dialoguing with the disciplines and techniques of transformation of the built landscape.
E' considerato prerequisito la conoscenza della storia dell'architettura moderna e contemporanea , discipline affrontate nel triennio di base.

Il corso è finalizzato a fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per una lettura critica del rapporto tra architettura e città e tra processi di storicizzazione e processi di patrimonializzazione. In particolare, il corso affronterà le trasformazioni dell'architettura e delle città europee, sullo sfondo di un quadro globale, lungo il quadro cronologico di un “lungo Ottocento” che prende avvio alla metà del XVIII secolo e termina con la prima guerra mondiale. Una stagione decisiva per il formarsi di molti degli assetti territoriali, ma anche dei quadri interpretativi, del mondo moderno.
Struttura del corso:
Il corso è articolato in:
a) una parte istituzionale sulla storia dell’architettura occidentale nel lungo Ottocento;
b) una parte monografica sulla storia delle trasformazioni urbane nello stesso periodo, svolta attraverso l’osservazione ravvicinata di sei città (New York, Londra, Barcellona, Parigi, Berlino, Shanghai);
c) una parte seminariale, da svolgere in aula con il supporto della docenza sulle forme in cui architetture e città dell’Ottocento sono diventate, a partire dagli anni Settanta, oggetto di patrimonializzazione, in particolare attraverso uno studio critico dei siti compresi nella Lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Unesco.
Le parti a) e b) sono svolte attraverso lezioni frontali tenute dal docente e poggiano su una bibliografia specifica.
La parte c) si basa su un lavoro di ricerca svolto in aula dagli studenti, tendenzialmente in gruppi di due persone, lungo un periodo di sei settimane.
The course aims to provide students with the tools for critically understanding the relationship between architecture and the city and between history-making and heritage-making processes. In particular, the course will address the transformations of European architecture and cities, against the backdrop of a global framework, within the chronological framework of a "long nineteenth century" that begins in the mid-eighteenth century and ends with the First World War. This was a decisive period for the formation of many of the territorial structures, but also of the interpretative frameworks, of the modern world.
Structure of the course:
The course is divided into:
a) an institutional part on the history of Western architecture in the long 19th century;
b) a monographic part on the history of urban transformation in the same period, carried out through close observation of six cities (New York, London, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Shanghai);
c) a part of the seminar, to be held in the classroom with the support of the lecturer on the forms in which 19th-century architecture and cities have become, since the 1970s, the object of heritage-making practices, in particular through a critical study of the sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Parts a) and b) are carried out through frontal lessons held by the teacher and are based on a specific bibliography.
Part c) is based on research work carried out in the classroom by the students, basically in groups of two people, over a period of six weeks.
Il corso alterna lezioni frontali da parte del docente a momenti di discussione e di revisione con gli studenti. In particolare:
- Le lezioni del lunedì mattina presenteranno nei suoi punti essenziali il libro di testo proposto per la parte a), discutendone i contenuti anche alla luce delle tendenze di ricerca più recenti.
- Le lezioni del mercoledì pomeriggio saranno dedicate alla parte b) sulla storia urbana dell’Ottocento e consisteranno in un approfondimento sulle sei città oggetto del corso.
- Le lezioni del venerdì mattina saranno interamente dedicate al lavoro seminariale, da svolgere in aula con il supporto della docenza, sui siti Unesco dedicati all’architettura e all’urbanistica dell’Ottocento.
The course alternates between frontal lessons by the teacher and moments of discussion and revision with the students. In particular:
- Monday morning lessons will present the main points of the textbook proposed for part a), discussing its contents also in the light of the most recent research trends.
- Wednesday afternoon lessons will be dedicated to part b) on the urban history of the nineteenth century and will consist of an in-depth study of the six cities covered by the course.
- Friday morning lessons will be entirely dedicated to seminar work, to be carried out in the classroom with the support of the teaching staff. The seminar will focus on the critical analysis of UNESCO sites dedicated to 19th century architecture and town planning.

L’esame consisterà in:
- una prova scritta sulla parte a) del programma;
- una prova orale sulla parte b);
- una valutazione da parte della docenza degli elaborati redatti in itinere (presentazioni, bibliografie, brevi saggi critici, ecc.) per le esercitazioni svolte in aula relativamente alla parte c); questi ultimi elaborati saranno oggetto di discussione in occasione dell’esame orale.
Ognuna di queste tre prove contribuirà al giudizio complessivo nella misura di circa un terzo della valutazione.
La prova scritta relativa alla parte a), della durata di due ore, si terrà in corrispondenza del primo appello di ogni sessione d’esame e consisterà in una serie di domande a risposta libera. Non sarà possibile consultare materiale didattico (libri, appunti) durante la prova.
La parte (c) del programma può essere sostituita, in particolare per gli studenti non frequentanti, dallo studio di una bibliografia specifica che verrà specificata all’inizio del corso e che dovrà essere discussa in occasione dell’esame orale.
Ogni studente sarà valutato per l'accuratezza della preparazione, la capacità di analisi critica, la precisione dell’esposizione, le capacità comunicative, la partecipazione attiva agli esercizi di ricerca collettiva.
Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilità o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unità Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione più idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.

The examination will consist of:
- a written test on part (a) of the program;
- an oral exam on part (b);
- an evaluation, made by the professor, of the various materials (presentations, bibliographies, short critical essays, etc.) produced for the seminar illustrated in part c); the latter materials will also be discussed during the oral exam.
Each of these three sets of materials will contribute to the overall evaluation to the extent of about one-third.
Written test (part a), lasting two hours, will be held at the first call of each examination session and will consist of a series of open-ended questions. It will not be possible to consult teaching material (books, notes) during the exam.
Part (c) of the programme may be replaced, in particular for non-attending students, by the study of a specific bibliography which will be specified at the beginning of the course and which will have to be discussed during the oral exam.
Each student will be evaluated for accuracy of preparation, critical analysis, precision of exposure, communication skills, and active participation in collective research exercises.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
