L'insegnamento di chimica sperimentale va visto come il perfezionamento del corso di Chimica del primo anno che fornisce "le radici della tecnologia". Senza aumentare la quantità dei concetti chimici, ne completa, per alcuni di essi, il quadro e, più in generale approfondisce ed estende la cultura della chimica in quanto scienza sperimentale. L'insegnamento è quindi rivolto a tutti gli studenti del primo anno che vogliono approfondire i temi sviluppati nei corsi di chimica e di fisica con esperienze pratiche di laboratorio. In particolare si rivolge agli studenti di ingegneria chimica e alimentare, ambiente e territorio, materiali, ma anche energetici, meccanici, aerospaziali. L'insegnamento si sviluppa sulla base di un certo numero di esperienze di laboratorio che porta a risultati quantitativi che vanno elaborati, organizzati e discussi sulla base della teoria. Per sua stessa costituzione, quindi, l'insegnamento prevede relativamente poche ore di teoria in aula, per la spiegazione delle basi teoriche legate alle esperienze pratiche proposte, e impiega un rilevante numero di ore per le esercitazioni di laboratorio (almeno il 40%).
The course should be seen as the completion of the first year Chemistry one that provides "the roots of technology" This course intends to present chemistry as real experimental science. Some of the subjects discussed in the chemistry course are deepened without increasing the number of chemical concepts. the experiments should be essential in the understanding of the subjects presented during the lessons. This course is therefore open to all first-year students the aim is that of presenting some of the themes developed in the chemistry and physics courses from the practical laboratory experience viewpoint. In particular, it targets students of the Chemistry and Food, Environment and Territory, materials engineering programs, but also Energy, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering. The basis of this course is constituted by a of laboratory experiments . In general they are organized to forward quantitative results confirming a certain theory or demonstrating the correctness of an experimental law. That is why part of the lesson hours are dedicated to link the concepts explained to the process of the experiments. Even so the number of hours dedicated to experimentation is the 40% of the hours at disposal.
Lo studente con il presente corso: • Completa la conoscenza dei principali concetti base della chimica per mezzo della loro diretta applicazione. • Fa esperienza di pratica di laboratorio, non assistendo passivamente allo svolgersi qualitativo di un esperimento ma in prima persona gestendo un esperimento, sorgente di informazioni quantitative da elaborare e da discutere alla luce della teoria. • Fa esperienza nella gestione dei dati sperimentali tenendo conto delle sorgenti di errore provenienti dalla pratica di laboratorio e dallo strumento stesso e nella elaborazione degli stessi in informazioni sperimentali.
The student at the end of the course will: • increase his knowledge of the main basic concepts of chemistry through their direct practical application. • make experimental laboratory experiences not passively witnessing the unfolding of a qualitative experiment but personally programming and controlling an experiment as a source of quantitative information to be elaborated and discussed in the light of the theory. • make experience in the management of experimental data taking into account the error sources from the laboratory practice and by instrument itself
E’ necessario che lo studente abbia acquisito i concetti contenuti nel programma del corso di chimica per ingegneria.
The student needs to possess the concepts teached in the Chemistry course for engineering
Gli argomenti relativi alle varie esperienze sono: • cinetica chimica • aspetti termodinamici dell’equilibrio chimico • equilibri in soluzione acquosa e liquidio-vapore • elettrochimica • determinazione sperimentale di proprietà fisiche (viscosità) e chimiche (durezza acque) • sintesi di composti chimici essendo tutti argomenti già visti nel corso di chimica, l’ordine è imposto dalla organizzazione degli esperimenti in laboratorio. L'insegnamento si svilupperà facendo seguire al richiamo teorico dell’argomento la descrizione della esperienza. Seguirà una lezione in aula sulla discussione dei risultati ottenuti. Questo schema si ripeterà fino ad esaurimento delle esperienze.
The subjects developed during the lessons and related to experiments are: • Chemical kinetics • Chemical thermodynamics • Characterization of electrochemical systems • Analytical chemistry techniques for the quantitative and qualitative determination • Thermodynamic phenomena at the basis of distillation Two more subjects are treated not directly related to experiments: • Coordination compounds • Basics of theoretical chemistry Since all topics have been already seen in the Chemistry class, the order of teaching is ruled by the organization of the experiments in the laboratory.
La lista degli esperimenti è riportata di seguito. Essi si ripartiscono secondo i due aspetti che caratterizzano la chimica: lo studio delle proprietà dei materiali (mat) e dei processi (proc). 1 Titolazioni (redox e acido-base) per determinare il titolo di soluzioni a concentrazione ignota (mat) 2 Cinetica della reazione di idrolisi dell’acetato di etile (proc) 3 Verifica del principio di Le Chatelier – Brown sull’equilibrio CuCl2 <--> CuCl4 (proc) 4 Spiegazione del comportamento di reazioni redox mediante la serie elettrochimica dei potenziali di elettrodo (proc) 5 Curva caratteristica di una pila a combustibile (proc) 6 Determinazione sperimentale della durezza delle acque (mat) 7 Preparazione del solfato di rame (mat) 8 Determinazione del metallo costituente un carbonato (mat) 9 Distillazione (mat) 10 Elettrolisi dell’acqua con produzione di idrogeno e ossigeno (proc).
The list of experiments is shown below. • REDOX and acid – base titration to determine the title of solutions of unknown concentration • experimental verification of the electrode potential electrochemical series • determination of the chemical reaction order for the saponification reaction of ethilacetate with NaOH • distillation of two liquids mixture • Definition of the voltammetric characteristic of a PEM fuel cell • synthesis of copper sulphate • Water electrolysis with the production of hydrogen and oxygen • Determination of water hardness • analysis of an alkaline metal carbonate to determine the kind of alkaline metal present

La verifica consiste in una prova orale volta ad accertare la conoscenza dei concetti base di chimica e a verificare che lo studente è in grado di discutere in modo consapevole i risultati sperimentali ottenuti. Poiché la verifica del raggiungimento degli obiettivi formativi previsti prevede anche la discussione dell’attività sperimentale svolta e la valutazione delle relazioni sulle esperienze condotte dallo studente, potranno essere ammessi all’esame solo gli studenti che abbiano preso parte alle esercitazioni e riempito il diario di laboratorio
Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilità o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unità Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione più idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.

The exam consists of an oral test to verify if the student is able to: • thoroughly describe his preparing and carrying out e certain experiment • illustrate the obtained results • discuss them on the basis of the aobjective of the experiment. Since the verification of the achievement of the expected learning outcomes includes the discussion of experimental activities and assessment of the reports on the work carried out by the student, the laboratory diary written by every student and reporting his findings is of fundamental importance. Is also mandatory the student has to take part to the experimental sessions.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
