Gli atelier "Costruire nel costruito" sviluppano il progetto in contesti urbani e ambientali già consolidati, attraverso l’integrazione dei metodi disciplinari della Composizione architettonica e della Tecnologia dell’Architettura.
L’esperienza progettuale sarà focalizzata sul singolo organismo edilizio e sulle sue relazioni con l’intorno più prossimo. Gli argomenti trattati saranno relativi ad aspetti formali, di linguaggio architettonico, funzionali, tecnologico-costruttivi.
The Architectural Construction Studios "Building in the built environment" develop a project in well-established urban and/or environmental contexts. The studio experience will be focussed on a single building seen in its relation with the surrounding environment, and will be conducted making use of the integrated methodologies of Architectural Design and Architectural Technology. It has two main objectives:
- to provide specific knowledge on how to design a building in relationship to the nearest environment;
- to acquire a certain degree of awareness of the need to meet human requirements, and about the constructional feasibility.
Gli atelier si propongono di trasmettere specifiche conoscenze per affrontare il progetto di un organismo edilizio in contiguità con il tessuto edificato esistente, per riqualificare l’intero ambito coinvolto, relative a:
• identificazione e comprensione dei caratteri tipologici, morfologici, distributivi e tecnologici del tessuto esistente;
• comprensione della complessità del processo progettuale individuando le soluzioni progettuali, anche a scala di dettaglio, più appropriate alle esigenze che il tema specifico esprime.
Le capacità acquisite a conclusione degli Atelier saranno:
• cogliere pienamente le potenzialità progettuali che derivano dall’interazione tra forma e tecnica, rapportate al contesto;
• affrontare il progetto architettonico alla scala del singolo manufatto edilizio;
• individuare – a partire dalla lettura interpretativa dei caratteri delle preesistenze – i criteri necessari a stabilire un dialogo tra progetto e contesto;
• gestire autonomamente un progetto di architettura in un tempo determinato e di rispettare il calendario delle attività progettuali, che porta a ultimare il progetto in tutte le sue parti entro la fine del semestre.
• raggiungere una progressiva e autonoma consapevolezza critica delle diverse componenti che interessano il progetto.
The studios intend to transmit specific knowledge in order to tackle the design of a building in connection with the built fabric it is part of, and rehabilitate it. Such knowledge includes:
• identifying and understanding the typological, morphological, functional and technological characters of the existing fabric
• understanding the complexity of the design process, identifying the solutions and details more appropriate to respond to the needs expressed by the design theme.
At the end of the studios, it is expected that students will acquire the following knowledge and skills:
• understanding of the design potential arising from the interaction between form and technique
• ability to deal with architectural design at the scale of the single building, in particular demonstrating consistency of design choices (both regarding spaces and building techniques); skill to analyse and satisfy functional requirements, above all regarding living quality; skill to appropriately specify building materials and systems according to physical properties, expected performance and feasibility
• capacity to identify the criteria needed to establish a dialogue between project and context, stemming from the interpretation of the characters of the latter
• capacity to manage autonomously an architectural project in a given time and to comply with the schedule of design activities, which calls that the project be completed by the end of the semester.
Conoscenza e capacità di applicazione delle regole del disegno architettonico alle varie scale.
Conoscenza e capacità di impiego del linguaggio tecnico di base.
Conoscenza dell’articolazione del sistema tecnologico e del ruolo funzionale dei sottosistemi.
In particolare durante il semestre e in sede di esame verrà considerato positivamente dai docenti aver sostenuto con successo l’esame di Tecnologia dell’Architettura del primo anno del Corso di Laurea.

L’Atelier ha come tema l’elaborazione di un progetto architettonico e costruttivo di un edificio in un contesto urbano del Piemonte. L’edificio sarà in parte di nuova edificazione, in parte recupero dell’esistente, nella prospettiva della rigenerazione e riqualificazione urbana. La destinazione d’uso è la residenza.
Per quanto riguarda il modulo di Composizione architettonica e urbana si affrontano gli elementi del linguaggio, della forma e della composizione architettonica, l’integrazione nel contesto costruttivo nelle sue diverse valenze e i caratteri tipologici dell’architettura.
Per quanto riguarda il modulo di Tecnologia dell’Architettura si fa riferimento alle seguenti tematiche:
- approccio esigenziale-prestazionale applicato al progetto, ponendo l’attenzione sia al sito di progetto letto nelle sue diverse componenti, sia all’utente e alle sue specifiche caratteristiche, attività ed esigenze;
- definizione e analisi dei requisiti funzionali degli spazi e dei componenti dell’edificio come guida per lo sviluppo del progetto;
- sistemi costruttivi, scelte tecnologico-costruttive di dettaglio ed esiti funzionali analizzati, discussi e applicati nella loro complessità;
- principali norme.
The Architectural Construction Studio introduces students to the issues raised by the project in a specific urban and environmental context, coming to explore in detail the interplay between compositional and linguistic aspects of the project and the technological and construction ones.
The physical context of the project will necessarily be more limited - from a purely dimensional point of view - from that analyzed in the course of the Architectural Urban Studio of the first year of the degree course. It will work at the scale of the single architectural building, focusing on a portion of the existing fabric , in which students will have to add new functions - or integrate the functions which are present - through the expansion and eventually the renovation of the existing buildings.
During the lectures and the design discussions, adequate conceptual and operational tools will be provided to face and to prioritize the design choices related to typological, technological and distribution aspects.
An important element of reflection within the studio activity will be the theme of sustainable development, understood in its broadest sense, i.e. that call into question the technological aspects of the project and morphological, as well as cultural and social problems.
The lessons will be divided into thematic blocks, carried out in parallel on different themes: the study of the built fabric under investigation; the analysis of the distributional and compositional aspects of the building in project, both internally and towards public space; the investigation of technological aspects of the design process, from the understanding of the character of the existing fabric, to the evaluation of the alternatives in the choice of the constructive system and the organization of the building envelope.
These themes, studied individually, will find significant opportunities to discussion in some interdisciplinary lectures, during which one or more case studies of particular significance will be analyzed in their essential aspects.
Gli studenti sono organizzati in piccoli gruppi di lavoro e sono previste in itinere revisioni sia dei singoli gruppi sia collettive/seminariali. L’insegnamento si articola in lezioni ex cathedra, video di realizzazioni in cantiere, esercitazioni e contributi esterni su specifici argomenti oltre ad attività di revisione individuale e collettiva. La verifica dello stato di avanzamento del progetto, dalla sua impostazione metodologica alla fase di definizione del dettaglio costruttivo, avviene attraverso giornate seminariali intermedie in cui tutti i gruppi saranno chiamati a presentare il loro lavoro.
Educational activities will consist in the organic development of a design process, both through theoretical lessons and project reviews performed by the two teachers – singularly or jointly.
Students will be working mainly in groups of two-three.
Meetings with professional architects and experts, as well as visits to built works and/or building products manufacturers may complement the studio activity.
Both the teachers’ lessons and such meetings and visits will preferably take place during the first phase of the studio work, while the second phase will be mainly dedicated to the completion of the project, the implementation of the final documents, and cross-checks at different scales.
The studio activity will be cadenced by regular planned deadlines, in which students will be required to submit the results of the development of specific aspects of the work, and teachers will be able to verify the effective and correct performances. The design work will have to be therefore an activity carried out with absolute continuity, without suspension or interruption of any kind, gradually amassing materials, semi-finished products which - near the exam - it will be necessary to reorganize and to complete, each part in coherence with the other ones, with the teachers revisions at different scales. In this sense, the interim deadlines are intended to help students in keeping the work in step with the evolution of the studio activity.

La frequenza continuativa e partecipata all’Atelier e l’aver superato l’esame di Tecnologia dell’Architettura del I anno sono condizioni molto importanti per un esito positivo dell’esame. L’esame è orale e consiste:
- nella verifica delle competenze acquisite, attraverso domande, sui temi trattati durante il semestre;
- nella verifica, attraverso la discussione sul progetto, della capacità dello studente di applicare gli strumenti conoscitivi forniti nella definizione del progetto, dalla sua impostazione teorica fino all’elaborazione figurativa e tecnologica.
Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilità o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unità Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione più idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.

The exam will be oral, and will consist for each group in the discussion of the project prepared during the Studio work. The elements of assessment will be:
- the active participation at the various activities of the studio (lectures, discussion of projects, any visits, etc. . ), by groups and individual students;
- critical skills, capability of research and of motivation of the choices made at different scales, evaluated during the entire design work;
- the capacity of comply with scheduled deliveries, and to conclude the project by the end of the semester;
- the final outcome of the work, in terms of quality of the design proposal and with particular reference to the objectives of the architectural construction studio (see the section "expected learning outcomes");
- the accuracy and completeness of drawings required;
- the capacity of each group, and of each student individually, in describing and arguing critically, during the examination, the choices made in the project at its different scales.
Pass marks in both disciplines are required in order to pass the final examination.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
