Writing Scientific Papers in English (WSPE) is a course for PhD students who are beginning to publish their research in English. The course aims to help participants discover the conventions of research articles in English and to provide useful tools that will enable them to write academic papers independently in the future.
WSPE is a soft skills course worth 15 hours. You are required to attend at least 70% of the lessons and complete the assigned course work. Please notice that absence from the first two lessons will automatically lead to exclusion from the course.

Hold one of the following certificates: IELTS 6, TOEFL IBT 80, Cambridge FIRST B2 (NB: minimum score 173), or ADVANCED C1 or PROFICIENCY C2 or take the CLA level test and pass it with a minimum score of 65
Course Content
The course focuses on conventional text structures and language which are commonly used in research articles in English, considering standard article sections such as Introductions, Methodology and Results sections. Participants are helped to build up the language resources necessary to write papers in their own field of research and have to complete weekly writing assignments.
Course structure
The course consists of 11 lessons: an introductory Induction lesson is followed by 5 weeks of twice-weekly lessons.
Access to the course:
To access the enrolment procedure, WSPE must be in your career plan for this academic year.
A link for booking is available under the LINGUE tab on your personal page of the Portale della Didattica, where you can see the course calendars and the enrolment periods. This link will only appear if you have presented one of the following certificates to the Office of Student Services (Segreteria Didattica) or to SCUDO:
- IELTS 6
- TOEFL IBT 80
- Cambridge FIRST B2 (NB: minimum score 173) or ADVANCED C1 or PROFICIENCY C2
and the information has been recorded on your personal page (Personal Details section).
If you do not have any of the above certificates, or if you have a lower-level certificate, but you feel that your English has improved since you gained it, you should take the CLA level test and pass it with a minimum score of 65, prior to the beginning of each enrolment period.
NB: for WSPE course #1 starting on 12 Jan 2023 - last day for level test: 13/12/2022.
