PERIOD: JUNE - JULY The course aims at providing the Ph.D student with basic knowledge for the design of surgically inspired medical devices. Attention will be given to the criteria for the selection of the constituent material (polymeric, inorganic), surface modification to improve biocompatibility/bioactivity/biomimicry, and device design in mininvasive surgical techniques. The course will include practical case studies in surgery, which will vary according to the background of the attending students. E.g. As regards orthopaedics and traumatology the anatomic criteria on which it is based the design of prosthetic components and devices for osteosynthesis will be described; furthermore the characteristics of the instruments used for tissue sparing implant will be pointed out.
