The course Petroleum and mining geology is mainly aimed to provide geological skills for engineers involved in the Petroleum industry and mining. Primary objectives of the first part Introduction to Geology and rocks are to describe the basic concepts of the Physical Geology, the internal structure of the earth, the rocks classification and origin. The lessons course concentrates mainly on sedimentology and sedimentation environments. The second part Sedimentary basins and Hydrocarbons concentrates on sedimentary basins and highlights selected geological principles and processes and relationships with hydrocarbons generation and accumulation. In the third part the course focus on the Mining Geology. In particular lessons regard the fundamentals of the mineral resources, mine design, mine mapping and sampling, resource estimation methods. A fourth part regards the basic concepts of Geological mapping and geological data interpretation and correlation.

The course is subdivided into four main sections. Section I: Introduction to Geology and rocks (4 CFU) Lectures: Introduction to Geology, Geologic time, the Earth system, the rock cycle, Earth internal structure, Continental drifts and their evidences, plate tectonics, mechanism, continental boundaries. Rock-forming minerals, Igneous and metamorphic rocks. Introduction to Sedimentology, Sedimentray rocks. Sediment transport and deposition. Sedimentary structures. Facies and depositional environments. Stratigraphic principles, Sequence stratigraphy, Sedimentological Processes Modeling. Section II: Sedimentary basins and Hydrocarbons (2 CFU) Lectures: Characterization and evolution of sedimentary basins. Oil and gas systems, Source rocks and petroleum generation, Petroleum migration, Petroleum accumulation in trap. Section III - Mining Geology (2 CFU) Lectures: Mine design, mine mapping, sampling and mineral resources. Section IV – Geological mapping (2 CFU) Lectures: Fundamentals of mapping, Geological survey, Data acquisition, Correlations, Conceptual geological models. This section includes both lectures and practical exercises

Lessons will be held in plenary sessions. The exercises in the final part of the course were held in small groups directly in the classroom. Depending on the organization conditions it could be possible to make a field trip.

The written examination (1,10 hours) consists of a set of questions, numerically evaluated. If the numerical assessment is sufficient (over 18/30) students can ask for an optional oral exam to improve the final evaluation.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
