PERIOD: MARCH - APRIL The course aims to introduce students in the field of metamaterials and of passive and active High Impedance Surfaces (HIS) and/or Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS). Metamaterials are not present in nature, but are built artificially. The study and the synthesis of the geometry of such "synthetic" materials and the optimization of their response to an external electromagnetic excitations are the main aspects considered in the course. These materials are more and more used in various applications, like miniaturization and reduction of blocking in antennas, generation of high power microwave pulses, cloaking, screens for electromagnetic compatibility, etc. The course reports examples and case studies from different fields of science, as physics, acoustics, mechanics, etc.

Introduction, history and fundamental theories: 1-, 2- and 3-D periodic structures, dispersion diagram. Analytic and numerical methods for the analysis. Guiding and open structures including metamaterials. Planar and conformal High Impedance Surfaces. Applications: leaky wave antennas, cloaking, frequency selective surfaces, noise reduction in switching networks, reflectarray antennas. Numerical simulations and measurement on prototypes. The evaluation of the achievements is done with individual or small group (max 2 students) on assignments/term papers focused on topics of interest of the course.
