PERIOD: APRIL - JUNE Filtration processes of suspended particles (colloids) in saturated porous media are extremely relevant in many engineering applications, including particle transport in aquifer systems and fluid filtration in several industrial applications. The course provides theoretical and practical information on filtration processes in porous media and on the associated clogging. Issues related to unstable colloidal systems and particle behavior in non Newtonian fluids also presented. The topics are presented with a multi-scale approach, from the microscopic pore scale to the field scale, with a specific focus on filtration processes of environmental relevance (dispersion of nanoparticles in the subsurface, remediation of contaminated aquifers).

Introduction: properties of porous media, flow and transport of solutes and particles in saturated porous media. Particle transport in porous media at the microscale: state of the art on experimental and modeling approaches (imaging and numerical simulations). Particle transport in porous media at the macroscale: laboratory tests and modeling. Mass transport equations, colloid/porous medium interaction mechanisms (equilibrium and non equilibrium interactions, reversible and irreversible retention). Porous medium clogging. Transport of unstable colloidal suspensions. Particle filtration in non Newtonian fluids. Environmental applications: injection of iron nanoparticles for groundwater remediation. Use of the software MNMs to simulate particle transport in 1D and radial geometries.

Modalità di esame:
Exam:
...
Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
