The course is structured as a problem-based learning. A real case study will be proposed to be tackled with the multi-methodological framework duly illustrated. The course (15h), structured as a workshop, illustrates how the notion of multi-methodology could be an effective means to tackle the complexity of a real-world situations where, besides the uncertainties referred to the ‘ordinary’ problems of contemporary cities, there are in addiction new challenges for future cities. The first are connected to the fact that the project of an architectural/urban transformation has to do with uncertainties connected to the environment, values and decisions. The latter refers to disruptive events around climate change and pandemics at local and global scales, that are currently under debate in the cities and that represent a type of catastrophic event or just unknown in their effects. The course proposes the adoption of a multi-methodological framework based on Problem Structuring Methods (PSMs; Mingers and Rosenhead, 2004) and supported by Multicriteria Decision Analyses (MCDA; Greco et al., 2016) in order to tackle decision problems characterized by high levels of uncertainty and complexity. In particular, we will structure and support the decision process by using a new software called SCA+, developed by POLITO from a research idea of Prof. Isabella Lami. The core of SCA+ is a PSM called Strategic Choice Approach (SCA; Friend and Hickling, 2005) that allows structuring the problem, identify the criteria and provide possible options. SCA recognizes different stakeholders and viewpoints, and significant elements of uncertainty and lack of information. Together with the SCA method, the tool SCA+ integrates a MCDA called Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP; Saaty, 1980). The AHP is a MCDA approach that is suitable for dealing with complex systems related to making a choice from among several alternatives and which provides a comparison of the considered options. In the analysis, a complex problem can be divided into several sub-problems that are organized according to hierarchical levels, where each level denotes a set of criteria or attributes related to each sub-problem (Saaty, 1980). The new informatic tool SCA+ is an area of research to observe how the use of an IT tool that combines a PSM and a MCDA contributes to the design of alternatives to solve a decision-making problem in a participatory situation (physically in the same room or virtual workshops).
