This short course on demolitions aims to show the progressive tendency of this topic to evolve towards an increasingly current technological discipline. Demolishing is probably easier than building, and the notions needed to plan and complete a demolition are on a more rudimentary level than those required to plan and complete construction, but, just as certainly, learning the basics of demolition can be significant in the evolutionary scenario in both civil and environmental engineering. Demolition techniques are essential: no demolition project can be approved if the collateral construction project is missing. The objectives of the course are, in summary, to represent the main techniques in use and to provide the elements necessary to identify those most suitable for specific needs, also based on technical-economic evaluations, and to critically examine the landscape of demolitions for different types of structures and different materials.

Nozioni di Scienza delle Costruzioni; nozioni di tecniche di scavo.
Notions of Structural Mechanics; notions of excavation techniques.
Reasons for carrying out the demolitions: theme setting and overview. Techniques and equipment for mechanical demolition: expansive mortars, hydraulic hammers, pliers and shears, and cutters. Techniques in use for weakening a structure before demolition. Summary of equipment and examples of important cases. Techniques involving the collapse. Partial demolitions (conservative); lateral fall; vertical fall; implosion. Mixed methods, special problems (parts of bridges, viaducts, etc.). Water infusion. Techniques not involving the collapse include progressive demolition (disassembling) from the top and sectioning. Unwanted effects and their control: fall outside the expected area, throws, vibrations, air blasts, and noises. Meaningful examples and analysis of real cases (both civil and industrial demolitions).
