Internet è parte della vita di tutti noi, e le tecnologie che ci mette a disposizione sono usate in tutte le discipline ingegneristiche che fanno uso di soluzioni derivanti dal mondo dell’Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Capire come Internet e le reti di telecomunicazione funzionano è quindi fondamentale per tutti i settori dell’ingegneria, dalla biomedica all’informatica, dall’elettronica ai settori gestionali. In questo contesto, questo corso ha come obiettivo di permettere agli studenti di Ingegneria di sperimentare in laboratori pratici le possibilità e le problematiche legate all’utilizzo di Internet per un uso consapevole e critico di questi strumenti. Il corso è prettamente sperimentale: gli studenti svolgono esperienze di laboratorio mirate ad affrontare problematiche di complessità crescente, al fine di acquisire una conoscenza sperimentale delle possibilità offerte dalle applicazioni di Internet. Il corso è interesse per gli studenti più vicini alle applicazioni di Internet (Ing. Elettronica, Ing. Informatica, Ing. del Cinema e dei Mezzi di Comunicazione, Ing. Gestionale, Ing. dell’autoveicolo). Il corso è offerto a tutti gli studenti di Ingegneria che hanno conoscenze di base del funzionamento di Internet e dei protocolli TCP/IP, e che intendano approfondire le stesse. Durante lo svolgimento dei laboratori, gli studenti lavoreranno in gruppi di tre colleghi, aventi anche provenienze diverse in modo da bilanciare le competenze all’interno dei gruppi. Alla fine del corso, lo studente avrà sviluppato capacità critiche e pratiche rispetto al funzionamento di Internet. Gli studenti svilupperanno competenze sperimentali relative alla progettazione e esecuzione di esperimenti di laboratorio e l' analisi critica dei risultati ottenuti su basi tecnico-scientifiche, analizzando l’impatto di diverse soluzioni. Lavorando con altri colleghi, lo studente svilupperà anche capacità di lavoro di gruppo e di divisione del lavoro. È POSSIBILE SVILUPPARE I LABORATORI INDIVIDUALMENTE A CASA IN CASO DI IMPOSSIBILITÀ DI FREQUENTARE I LABORATORI DEL POLITECNICO.
Internet is part of the life of all of us, and we use the networking technologies in all engineering disciplines that make use of solutions of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Understanding how the Internet and communications networks work is therefore fundamental for all engineering sectors, from biomedical to computer engineering, from electronics to management sectors. In this context, this course offers students practical laboratories to face in practice the possibilities and problems related to the usage of the Internet, for a conscious and critical use of these tools. The course is purely experimental: students carry out laboratory experiments aimed at tackling problems of increasing complexity, in order to acquire an experimental knowledge of the possibilities offered by Internet applications. The course is of interest to students closest to Internet applications (Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Cinema and Media Engineering, Management Engineering, Automotive Engineering). The course is offered to all Engineering students who have basic knowledge of the operation of the Internet and of the TCP / IP protocols, and who intend to deeper their understanding via practical laboratories. During laboratories, students will work in groups of three colleagues, with different background to balance the skills within each group. At the end of the course, the student will acquire the ability to use applications on the Internet having developed critical and practical skills, and to address the problems that may arise in using it. Students will develop experimental skills related to practical experiments and the analysis on a technical-scientific basis, analyzing the impact of different solutions. Working with other colleagues, the students will also develop skills in teamwork and division of labor. IT IS POSSIBLE TO RUN EXPERIMENTS ALSO AT HOME IN CASE OF DIFFICULTIES OF REACHING POLITECNICO LABORATORIES.
Il corso prevede lezioni introduttive e di richiamo dei fondamentali protocolli in uso in Internet, e diversi laboratori pratici: • 20 ore (2 crediti) di lezioni in cui saranno presentati in aula gli esperimenti e gli aspetti fondamentali per il loro svolgimento. • 40 ore (4 crediti) dedicate agli esperimenti di laboratorio, da svolgere presso i Laboratori Informatici di Base (LAIB) o con il proprio PC(*). Il Laboratorio di Internet si focalizza su esperienze legate alla configurazione ed utilizzo di tecnologie comunemente utilizzate in Internet. Gli studenti avranno a disposizione dei PC, dotati di sistema operativo Linux. Tramite l'uso di reti locali, cablate e Wifi, e di semplici strumenti comunemente usati su Internet, gli studenti dovranno svolgere le esperienze di laboratorio con l’aiuto dei docenti. Ogni gruppo avrà a disposizione 3 PC per lo svolgimento delle esperienze di laboratorio. Le esperienze di laboratorio variano dalla configurazione di una rete locale, all’analisi di traffico di un attacco informatico, alla misura di prestazioni (speedtest), alla navigazione di pagine web su internet. Alla fine del corso, lo studente avrà maturato la conoscenza e la capacità critica di analisi di applicazioni comunemente utilizzati in Internet. Lo studente saprà identificare problematiche che tali sistemi offrono, e avrà maturato uno spirito critico che permetterà allo stesso di utilizzare le stesse nella sua vita professionale. (*) In caso di impossibilità di usare le strutture del Politecnico, sarà comunque possibile svolgere gli esperimenti a casa in autonomia, anche grazie all'uso di macchine virtuali.
The course includes introductory and recall lessons of the fundamental protocols in use on the Internet, and several practical laboratories: • 20 hours (2 credits) of lectures in which the experiments and the fundamental aspects for their execution are presented. • 40 hours (4 credits) dedicated to laboratory experiments, to be carried out at the Basic Computer Labs (LAIB) or with your PC(*). The Internet Laboratory focuses on experiences related to the configuration and usage of technologies commonly used on the Internet. Students will have PCs with Linux operating systems at their disposal. Through the use of wired and Wifi networks and simple devices commonly used on the Internet, students will carry out experiments with the help of lecturers. Each group will have 3 PCs available to carry out laboratory experiments. The laboratory experiences vary from the configuration of a local network, to the analysis of traffic of a cyber attack, to the measure of performance (speedtest), to web page browsing on the internet. At the end of the course, the students will have gained the knowledge and critical ability to analyse applications commonly used on the Internet. The students will be able to identify problems that these systems offer, with a fundamental critical spirit useful also in their professional life. (*) In case of difficulties in using the facilities of the Politecnico, it will still be possible to carry out the experiments at home autonomously, also thanks to the use of virtual machines.
Gli studenti devono avere conoscenze di base del funzionamento di Internet e dei reti di comunicazione, e dei fondamentali di programmazione acquisiti nel corso di Informatica. Il corso non ha formalmente vincoli legati a insegnamenti precedenti, e richiede solo una conoscenza di base dei protocolli TCP/IP usati in Internet (Ethernet, IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP). Il docente richiamerà i concetti di base a lezione per permettere agli studenti di affrontare il corso senza requisiti - ma si assume che lo studente abbia già la conoscenza di base del funzionamento di Internet.
Students must have a basic understanding of how the Internet and communication networks work, and the fundamentals of computer programming as seen in the Informatics class. The course does not have formal constraints, and requires only a basic knowledge of the Internet protocols (Ethernet, IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP). The lecturer will recall the basic concepts in class to allow students to run experiments - but it is assumed that students already have the basic knowledge of how the Internet works.
Il Laboratorio di Internet si focalizza su esperienze legate alla configurazione ed utilizzo di tecnologie comunemente utilizzate in Internet. In particolare il modulo prevede i seguenti laboratori: • Configurazione di computer per l’utilizzo di Internet in una rete locale, assegnazione di indirizzi IP, verifica connettività con Ping. Funzionamento protocolli ARP, ICMP (10 ore) • Misurare la capacità di accesso tramite di Ping (6 ore) • Analisi di traffico tramite sniffer di rete. Funzionamento dei protocolli TCP, UDP e HTTP in Internet - da echo, a chargen a analisi di pagine web (10 ore) • Analisi di traffico generato da possibili attacchi di sicurezza di tipo portscan in reti locali (6 ore) • Ingegnerizzazione di applicazioni di “Speedtest” e misure in laboratorio con analisi di impatto diversi scenari di rete (10 ore) • Configurazione di routing IP - uso di route statiche (6 ore) • Analisi di applicazioni reali in Internet (12 ore)
The Internet Laboratory focuses on experiences related to the configuration and use of technologies commonly found on the Internet. In particular, the module includes the following laboratories: • Computer configuration for using the Internet in a local network, assigning IP addresses, checking connectivity with Ping. Functioning of ARP protocols, ICMP (10 hours) • Measurement of access capacity using Ping (6 hours) • Traffic analysis using network sniffers. Operation of TCP, UDP and HTTP protocols on the Internet - from echo, to chargen to web page analysis (10 hours) • Analysis of traffic generated by possible portscan-type security attacks in local networks (6 hours) • Engineering of "Speedtest" applications and laboratory measurements with impact analysis of different network scenarios (10 hours) • IP routing configuration - use of static routes (6 hours) • Analysis of real applications on the Internet (12 hours)
Il corso si svolge per la maggior parte presso i Laboratori Didattici di Base (LAIB). Il docente presenterà a lezione i contenuti teorici necessari per svolgere le esperienze di laboratorio (20 ore, 2 crediti). Le stesse saranno svolte dagli studenti presso i LAIB, lavorando in gruppi di tre studenti, e con l’aiuto del docente per un totale di 40 ore di laboratorio (4 crediti). Gli studenti, sempre lavorando in gruppo, saranno chiamati quindi a svolgere relazioni di laboratorio su tematiche selezionate dal docente. In caso di impossibilità di usare le strutture del Politecnico, sarà comunque possibile svolgere gli esperimenti a casa in autonomia, anche grazie all'uso di macchine virtuali.
The course takes place for the most part at the Basic Educational Laboratories (LAIB). The professor will present the theoretical contents necessary for carrying out laboratory experiments (20 hours, 2 credits). The same will be carried out by the students at the LAIB, working in groups of three students, and with the help of the professor for a total of 40 laboratory hours (4 credits). The students, always working in groups, will therefore be called to carry out laboratory reports on topics selected by the teacher. In case of difficulties in using the facilities of the Politecnico, it will still be possible to carry out the experiments at home autonomously, also thanks to the use of virtual machines.
Sono disponibili dispense delle lezioni e delle esercitazioni, i manuali e il materiale necessario per le esercitazioni di laboratorio e per lo svolgimento dei progetti. Tutto il materiale didattico è scaricabile da un sito web o attraverso il portale. Verrà inoltre dato accesso a videolezioni registrate di altri corsi per poter colmare eventuali lacune formative.
Course notes are available for lessons and exercises, along with manuals and the necessary materials for laboratory exercises and for carrying out projects. All teaching material can be downloaded from a website or through the web portal. Access to recorded video lessons from other courses will also be given in order to fill in any training gaps.
Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria;
Durante i laboratori, gli studenti sono tenuti a lavorare in gruppo. Alla fine di ogni laboratorio, ogni gruppo dovrà consegnare una relazione scritta su le esperienze di laboratorio come indicato dal docente durante il corso (relazione di gruppo). In totale la relazione verte su 4 argomenti. Ogni relazione andrà consegnata come file PDF sul portale della didattica, secondo le scadenze definite dal docente di volta in volta. Ogni relazione verrà corretta per verificare la correttezza dei risultati riportati, e la completezza nella descrizione degli esperimenti svolti. Tutti gli studenti del gruppo avranno lo stesso voto, espresso in trentesimi, fino ad un massimo di 30/30. Il voto del report di gruppo è lo stesso per tutti gli studenti membri del gruppo. Il voto del report di gruppo ha validità di due anni. Ogni studente dovrà sostenere un esame orale che verterà sulle tematiche riportate nelle relazioni prodotte in cui dovrà dimostrare di aver acquisito il senso critico e le metodologie sperimentali affrontate durante il corso. La prova orale consiste ha una durata tipica di 20 minuti. Per sostenere la prova orale, gli studenti dovranno aver totalizzato almeno 18/30 come risultato della relazione di laboratorio. La prova orale porterà fino a ±3 punti aggiuntivi (massimo 30 e lode). Nel caso la prova orale risulti insufficiente, l'esame risulterà fallito. La prova orale è sostenuta individualmente, a porte aperte. Il voto proposto sarà una media pesata della valutazione della relazione di gruppo (70%), e prova orale (30%).
Exam: Compulsory oral exam;
During the laboratories, students are required to work in groups. At the end of each laboratory, each group will have to deliver a written report on the laboratory experiences as indicated by the lecturer during the course (group report). In total, the report focuses on 4 topics, for 4 different reports. Each report must be delivered in a single PDF file, to be uploaded to the teaching portal, according to a deadline defined during the course. The reports will be corrected to verify the correctness of the reported results, and the completeness in the description of the experiments performed. All students in the group will have the same mark, expressed in thirtieths, up to a maximum of 30/30. The group report mark will be valid for all members of the group, and will be valid for two years. Once corrected, the report can be changed only in case all students agree. Each student must take an oral exam that will focus on the topics reported in the reports. The student will have to demonstrate that he has acquired the critical sense and the experimental methodologies faced during the course. The oral test consists of a typical duration of 20 minutes. To take the oral exam, students must have totaled at least 18/30 as a result of the laboratory report. Students who will take the optional oral exam will be able to obtain up to 4 additional points (maximum 30 cum laude). If the oral exam is insufficient, the exam will be failed. The oral exam is held individually, with open doors. The proposed vote will be a weighted average of the evaluation of the group relationship (70%), oral exam (30%).
