PERIOD: SEPTEMBER The course, which ranks among the activities of the new interdepartmental research center J-TECH@POLITO (Advanced Joining Technologies), aims at presenting to the PhD students the main industrial welding processes, as well as those based on mechanical joining through plastic deformation. The course also includes laboratory activities to acquire practical knowledge on some welding processes, on their numerical modeling, as well as on joint inspection.

The course also includes laboratory activities to acquire practical knowledge on some welding processes, on their numerical modeling, as well as on joint inspection.
Introduction to the main industrial joining processes. Fundamentals of welding metallurgy and thermo-mechanical analysis of welding processes. Pre- and post-weld heat treatments. Corrosion aspects of welded joints. Fusion welding processes (by arc, laser source, and electrical resistance) and brazing. Solid state welding processes: friction welding, friction stir welding, friction stir spot welding. Mechanical joining technologies: riveting, clinching and other joints through plastic deformation. Unconventional and innovative welding technologies. Classification of welding defects and techniques for joint inspection. Main welding standards. Laboratory experiences related to numerical simulation and realization of welded joints through one or more of the welding technologies available at the interdepartmental research center J-TECH@POLITO.

Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
