Peter J. Larkham

“URBAN MORPHOLOGY”, ISUF AND URBAN SHAPES IN TRANSITION. STATE OF THE ART
Peter Larkham, editor of the journal “Urban Morhology” and member of the Scientific
committee of ISUF, teaches courses in Building Surveying, Property Development and
Planning, and Real Estate, as well as the MA Planning Built Environments and the
Postgraduate Certificate in Research Practice.
Peter studied his PhD in Urban Geography at the University of Birmingham, where he then
worked on projects that were funded by the Leverhulme Trust and British Academy, before
joining Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University) in 1991.
He has published over 65 refereed journal papers and 40 book chapters, presented numerous
papers at conferences across the globe, and edited and written several books.
Peter is also Director of Research Degrees for the School of Engineering and the Built
Environment. He has vast experience as a PhD supervisor and examiner, having supervised 17
PhDs, examined 33 and chaired 25 vivas.

THE ITALIAN TRADITION OF URBAN MORPHOLOGY STUDIES
Sylvain Malfroy is art and architecture historian and lecturer at Zurich University of Applied
Sciences (ZHAW). He was assistant at the Chair for the History of Urban Design and
researcher at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), ETH Zurich. He is
co-founder of the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF) and member of the editorial
committee of the journal “Urban Morphology”.

MEDITERRANEAN BASIN AND MID ASIA. A WORK’S HYPOTHESIS
Attilio Petruccioli has been Professor of Landscape Architecture and Dean of the School of
Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy. From 1994 to 1998 he was the Aga
Khan Professor of Design for Islamic Societies at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic
Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2012-2013 he was the
Msheireb Property Chair at Qatar University. He funded, in 2018 the Bibliotheca Orientalis
Attilio Petruccioli and the Islamic Environmental Design Research Centre in Trani (Italy).
As a result of his longlasting and passionate interest, he has written and edited more than 32
books on the topics of architectural design and the history of Islamic architecture. His
research interests are the methodology of design (landscape and contextual design,
typological research and the work of modern architects), traditional settlements and housing,
Islamic architecture, town and territory and Mediterranean landscape architecture.

THE CHINESE TYPO-MORPHOLOGICAL APPROACH
CHEN Fei joined the Liverpool School of Architecture in April 2010. She was trained as an
architect and urban designer in the University of Bath (2004-5) and Southeast University,
China (1999-04). She got her PhD on Chinese urbanism from the University of Strathclyde
(2005-9). She was previously appointed as a researcher working on the AHRC funded project
'Sensory Urbanism' in Strathclyde. She is the co-founder and convenor of the 'Urban
Morphology and Representation Research Network' under IAPS. She i salso Fellow of The
Higher Education Academy (The Higher Education Academy, 2012)

TOWARDS A NEW GENERATION OF TYPOLOGICAL MAPS THROUGH SPACE SYNTAX
Tim Stonor is an architect and urban planner who has devoted his career to the analysis and
design of human behaviour patterns – the ways in which people move, interact and transact in
buildings and urban places. He is an internationally recognised expert in the design of spatial
layouts and, in particular, the role of space in the generation of social, economic and
environmental value.
Tim was appointed Managing Director of Space Syntax in 1995. He has led the company from
its origins at University College London to its position today as practice operating globally. He
is a Director of The Academy of Urbanism, a Visiting Professor at The Bartlett School of
Architecture, University College London, a Harvard Loeb Fellow and Deputy Chair of the UK
Design Council.
