The aim of the course is to provide understanding on how spatial planning can become part of an overall seismic risk mitigation strategy. The course integrates the skills and knowledge specific to planners with the knowledge and the technical principles of civil engineers. Students will learn to integrate urban planning and engineering tools to achieve safer urban and regional environments. The main objectives of this course are: A) Achieving the basic understanding of land use, urban and spatial planning that can contribute to risk mitigations B) Gaining the technical skills and the methodology for microzonation of seismic risk C) Understanding how to face seismic risk in settlements, combining the analysis of engineering properties of the buildings and physical infrastructure with the societal context and the human activities that take place there.

The course is organized into two modules and one exercise. Each module consists of three parts. Students are expected to apply the concepts and methodologies presented in the theoretical lectures into the exercise. The contents below list a number of topics which will be explored during the lectures with different degree of detail. 1. The risk chain (prevision-prevention-recovery-reconstruction) - institutions, skills and approaches that are involved at the different stages of the risk chain. 2. Spatial planning and emergency planning - the spatial planning system, levels and competences (territorial planning and sectoral planning) - the environmental issue into the spatial planning - the emergency planning and civil protection plans 3. The challenges of emergency planning - the components of risk: Specific vulnerability (exposure, magnitude, frequency) and the social vulnerability (context conditions, population, socio-economic factors) - the resilience paradigm 4. Seismic risk - Seismic Hazard: expected shaking - Vulnerability of constructions and its evaluations - Socio-economic criteria for exposure assessment - Post-seismic assessment 6. The course is organised with theoretical lessons and practical examples on the evaluation of seismic risk and its relation with spatial planning. The students are required to prepare as an homework a reported on seismic risk with quantitative evaluation for a municipality.
The course is organised with theoretical lessons and practical examples on the evaluation of seismic risk and its relation with spatial planning. The students are expected to work in groups to develop maps of expected damage and seismic risk for a municipality, including the social and economic implications.
Each lecture will be supported by slides and references that will be periodically uploaded on the web site of the course.

Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilitą o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unitą Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione pił idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.

The exam is composed of the public presentation of the group work in 2 parts during the semester and an oral individual exam (compulsory), with equal weight. The evaluation of the group work will be based on peer grading and grading by the teachers. The group work is intended to provide the practical skills necessary for the quantitative assessment of seismic risk for a municipality and its implications for urban planning. The oral exam will verify the knowledge of the theoretical issues, technical terminology, and the skills to summarize the key elements of the topics presented during the course. Students will have to demonstrate: - the acquired knowledge about the topic of the course; - the capacity of critical assessment of their group work also with reference to the projects by other groups; - the capabilities to apply the acquired knowledge and skills discussing examples and answering to questions. The final mark is the sum between the assessment of the oral exam and the evaluation of the group work presentation.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
