The core of the formative route of the Master in Architecture (Restoration) is the plan, considered both as a cognitive experience (determination, analysis, critical evaluation of the existing) oriented to preservation, evaluation, communication, and as a planning innovation to different levels: from the single building to the city, the landscape, the widespread heritage. In order to reach this aim, the ateliers develop the complexity of architectural and landscape heritage. The close examinations into the ateliers concern: the specific fields of preservation and enhancement, through technical instruments and data administration that support the determination, the knowledge, the planning and management choices, the programming and the communication. The close examinations also concern the plan of building and environmental systems and their elements consistent with the cultural values of heritage, able to add new resources of quality to the existing. The Urban Planning Atelier, fixed on the II didactic period of the first year, deals with the urban dimension of the architecture plan, integrating the town planning contribution with the city and territory planning.

Knowledge of theoretical aspects of architecture, of theories and techniques of architectural and urban planning; capability and ability to lay out, with methodological thoroughness, the necessary propaedeutic phase in every intervention for the comprehension of the existing and the context; knowledge of interdisciplinary aspects of the architecture plan (aesthetical, functional, town planning, social, cultural, economical). The students, who will pass the exam, will have acquired: - Capability to interpret and solve complex problems related to the transformation of the environment built and to the quality of “doing architecture”, with reference to the existing architectural heritage and to the aspects of architectural planning. - Capability to analyse the social and cultural context, to determine, to expect and to quantify real, possible and future questions and the reference interlocutors. Capability to value the broad outline of private, public and public-private advantages, focusing on the compatibility and sustainability of enhancement. - Capability to understand the town planning instruments, the indications and the bonds that determine a territory transformation and to identify the functions and their relation with services areas. The verification of knowledge occurs through intermediate and final exams, where the focus is on the capability of integration of acquired knowledge and on the critical evaluation of proposed resolving models.

Completing the first part of the didactic regulations, other curricular requisites are the degree title obtained in particular classes and the expertise and knowledge that the student acquired in the previous formative route. In particular, the student must have an appropriate individual preparation and some knowledge deriving from getting through the exams of architectural composition, town planning, geography and urban sociology of the Bachelor course in architecture. Moreover, the knowledge and capabilities deriving from the multidisciplinary Atelier “Renovation of the consolidated city” of the first didactic period of the Master Course.

The atelier deals with the urban dimension of the plan, integrating the contribution of architectural composition and of town planning, in order to represent a possible redefinition background of urban shape of same parts of the city. The atelier considers the development of a planning hypothesis in a settled context that carries – the conditions of use of territory have changed - possible traces of architectural and town planning stratifications susceptible of a second reading, of reclamation and functional integration. The course is composed of a critical phase: on the one hand to the context, through a synthetic realization of historical/urban presuppositions (at over local level too) where the area of planning experimentation is placed. On the other hand, through a series of frontal lessons that consider cases-study to discuss about places and architectures inserted in a settled urban structure. Both disciplines, the Architectural Composition and the Town Planning, work autonomously, but in synergy, especially on the necessary aspects of the plan.

Completing the programme, the exercises will be elaborated in small groups of 2/3 people, where every participant will be autonomously responsible for the whole elaboration. Among the activities of the atelier, there will be some common moments of comparison and debate about some specific themes, where everyone will have to intervene actively or to present his works in itinere: a useful activity for the final exam.
There are no additional information.
The atelier is organized in frontal lessons and operative moments composed of an inspection of the area of intervention, some meeting with the territory workers and a group revision/tutorship for the elaboration of the final plan tables. The period of atelier is divided into three parts. The first one focuses on the themes of urban reclamation of the settled city (to the urban and micro urban scale – that of the district), the knowledge of the place and its description useful to underline the existing problems (physical, social, economic decay), the valuable elements (environmental, functional, cultural) and the first planning intuitions. During this phase, a study tour will be organised in order to visit the area of intervention and to meet the useful subjects to lay out the plan; this phase ends with a common moment of presentation and discussion about the works of every student (object of evaluation of the final mark). The second phase concerns he general organisation of the urban plan: from the determination of the users/promoters, to the compatible functions, the type of intervention and the formal definition of new public spaces. Also in this phase, there will be a moment of final presentation valued by the professors. The students will have to work on a masterplan on a scale of 1:1500 to 1:2000. The third phase focuses entirely on the writing of the final plan, made a scale of 1.500 (total) – 1.200 (per parts). The two didactic modules in the frontal lessons will autonomously deal with the theoretical aspects of their discipline, knowing that the both contents will focus on the elaboration of the architectural plan of atelier. The themes of the lessons of Urban and Architectural Composition Module are: Phase 1 – How to read and describe an urban structure, as well as the architectural space; determining the elements of potentiality in order to instruct an intervention of reclamation/reworking of an urban section. Phase 2 – Explanation of interventions of transformation and integration of pre-existing manufactured products, placed into urban circles historically settled for compositional and functional themes. The lessons of Town Planning Module aim to provide the students with the expertise to understand and realize the urban transformation, so to pass from the indication of the field files to the effective hypothesis of books. The teaching includes two non-consequential, but correlated phases, which follow an introductory part about the relation between city and public spaces and about the role of masterplan as an instrument for transformation. Phase 1 – Looking around: Analysis of European cases of transformation of a broad area. Determination of the elements of quality of the space and of the valuable elements of process. During these phase, the participation of external professors is expected. Phase 2 – From parameters to transformation: introduction to index, files and planning regulation. The quality of urban space and the application of indications of the urban instruments. The study and project area will probably be located in an international context in order to stimulate the search for similarities and differences with the local reference context.

Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato progettuale individuale; Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
The student will be evaluated individually, for the group planning exercises too. The evaluation is composed of two parts: the marks expressed during the development of the atelier, especially at the end of the first two phases of activities (knowledge and strategy) and the final exam. With regard to the evaluation phases in itinere, there will be two specific moments for the presentation of the materials elaborated by the students and the marks constitute 40% of the final mark. Various elements contribute to the mark: the methodologic coherence, which is the quality and the organisation of the materials and the application of the knowledges and the instruments acquired during the formative process, namely the capacity of elaboration, the synthesis and the exposition of the materials presented. The exam is oral and it consists of an exposition by the student of the planning tables made according to the professors’ directions; during the oral exam, the students will have to respond to two or three questions concerning the course contents (lessons, bibliography, exercises results), especially about the planning strategies adopted. The elements that contribute to the mark are: - The choices made into the plan (introduction of new activities in the existing built-up areas, urban and architectural composition, strategies for the realization and the direction); - The capability to interpret and solve complex problems; - The capability of organisation and elaboration verified on the quality of tables and on technical contents of the relation, especially on the capability to analyse the social and cultural context(communication and precision of information on the urban and architectural scale ); - The exposition of the plan, namely the theoretic and applied contents; - The capability of critical analysis of the planning process and the results obtained.

The blended exam (online and onsite) will be carried out in the same way as described in the section “Assessment and grading criteria”. For students connected by remotely, the exam will be carried out using the platform provided by the Politecnico. The onsite exam and online exam will be the same.
