The course includes lectures, whose topics are described earlier, and practice on the lecture topics. Students will prepare an individual written report on the exercises proposed during the course. The report will contribute to the final exam grade. The course includes laboratory sessions on some course topics (such as SQL language, the creation of a database using a Database Management System, the creation of interactive dashboards for data reporting). Laboratory sessions allow experimental activities on the most widespread commercial and open-source products for database systems.

The reference book, covering the majority of the course topics, is: Database Systems – Concepts, Languages and Architectures Paolo Atzeni, Stefano Ceri, Stefano Paraboschi and Riccardo Torlone McGraw-Hill. Copies of the slides used during the lectures, examples of written exams and exercises, and materials for the activities in the laboratory will be made available. All teaching material is downloadable from the course website or the Portal.

Modalità di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Elaborato progettuale individuale;
Exam: Written test; Individual project;
Exam: Written test; Individual project;
The exam includes a written part, which lasts 90 minutes, and the evaluation of the reports on the individual practices assigned during the course. The delivery of the individual practices' reports is optional. The written part will assess the knowledge of the SQL language and the ability to write queries in the SQL language; the knowledge of the key aspects related to the design of relational databases; knowledge of some advanced aspects of databases design and query (such as spatial database, creating dashboards for reporting and for supporting decision making). The written part consists of close and open-ended questions (e.g., multiple-choice tests, open exercises). The points assigned to each exercise/question will be explicitly indicated next to the text of the exercise/question. Students are not allowed to use textbooks, notes, or additional electronic devices. The individual practice reports will assess the knowledge and ability of some course topics (such as the ability to write queries in SQL, the ability to design interactive dashboards to support decision making). The delivery of individual practices’ reports during the course is optional (max 3 points). The final exam grade is defined by considering the evaluation of the written part, and, optionally, of the individual practices. The individual practices are considered only if the grade of the written part is 18 or above.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
