The GIS for Cultural Heritage course refers to the Knowledge, Enhancement and Communication actions of Cultural Heritage. The main topic of the course is the use of metric and geographic digital technologies directed to the multi-dimensional and multi- temporal modelling of Cultural Heritage by using the results of the historical research aut the main characters and to produce synthetic results of specific analysis. The information are than structured inside a geographic databnd of the metric knowledge of the Heritage. The considered data share the possibility to be located inside a unique reference system which guarantees the cross analysis of different sets of heterogeneous data to improve the knowledge, to point oase (GIS) which represents the starting point for the basic knowledge useful to plan interventions, enhancements and communication strategies of the Cultural Heritage; this structure will guarantee the use of the same data structure for the different actions and will realize the conceptual scheme for the Documentation of the Cultural Heritage proposed at international level. Practices are partially connected to the "History of the city" course alongside the theme proposed by the aforementioned course (see course sheet 01QNCPV - History of the city and Digital Urban History for the current academic year).

The expected learning outcomes of the course can be divided into knowledge that will be acquired and skills that will be achieved at the end of the course itself. The main knowledge that will be acquired is: the ability to transfer the results of reading historical, formal, material and geometric data within a database whose structure depends on the result of the information analysed; the ability to represent the characterizing aspects that can be highlighted with appropriate digital enhancement strategies; the ability to extract detailed and general information and transfer it through multimedia communication methods. Using these skills, the student will be able to develop specific abilities, such as: reading and translation into logical schemes of the results of historical research relating to a Cultural Property seen as a whole and in its details; reading and geometric / descriptive interpretation of historical cartography; 2D modelling of historical events in a shared geographical context; 3D modelling of design data and / or deriving from historical and current metric surveys; creation of visualizations of thematic maps for the presentation of the results of historical and geometric analyses; creation of multimedia products (e.g. hypertexts, films, animations) for the correct documentation of the Cultural Property; representations at various scales of interest of the interactions of the Cultural Property with the surrounding environment.

Acquired knowledge that will be considered are the ones relating to the themes of architectural design, survey and metric survey of architecture. In particular, it is assumed that students possess the following skills: use of basic 2D and 3D automatic drawing tools; understanding the quality of measurements in terms of precision and accuracy; understanding of the formal structures of architecture.

The theoretical aspects that will be addressed during the course are: • FUNDAMENTALS OF CARTOGRAPHY: principles of cartography, metric and descriptive contents of cartography, main computer structures of cartography; cartographic bases for GIS. • FUNDAMENTALS OF GIS: definition and structure of a GIS; design of a GIS information layer; main GIS queries; production of thematic maps. • FUNDAMENTALS OF 3D MODELING OF ARCHITECTURE: three-dimensional geometric modelling of architecture; hints of parametric modelling of architecture. From a practical point of view, the students: will learn to build a database and the relative location of the phenomena it describes on a GIS platform, to geo-reference historical maps, to develop functional queries to the particular research carried out and to produce some thematic maps of interest; they will learn to create 3D models starting from historical survey and / or project data to visualize temporal variations of shape and consistency at various urban and architectural scales.

The presentations of the theoretical concepts of the two areas of interest will be carried out through lectures (2 CFU). The practical / application part will cover the use of the techniques introduced at a theoretical level in the development of some exercises aimed at learning the design and management of GIS projects and the modelling of buildings starting from significant historical documentation. Part of the exercises will be carried out by supporting the students in carrying out the research topic proposed by the teachers of the History of the City course using the GIS and Modelling techniques learned in the first part of the course. The students, assisted by the teachers, will work in groups (normally made up of 2 students) addressing the structuring of historical research data in order to carry out data analysis and original interpretations of the data. Complete reviews of the work carried out will be periodically proposed.

Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato grafico prodotto in gruppo;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Group graphic design project;
... The exam is aimed at make certain knowledge of the theoretical topics relating to the design of GIS platforms and the 3D modelling of architectural objects at different scales. Intermediate learning tests are foreseen at the end of each phase of the course, which will contribute to composing the final judgment as well as guaranteeing the conclusion of the learning process within the time limits of the Course. The final evaluation will be provided by the following tests which contribute with the same percentage to the judgment proposed to the students: - evaluation of the papers proposed by the teachers on the themes of 3D architectural modeling and the development of GIS projects - written test with open answer via PC managed by teachers aimed at ascertaining theoretical knowledge. The test consists of open questions and will last one hour, with individual evaluation and without the possibility of using the teaching material; - Individual or group compulsory online oral test aimed at discussing and deepening the results of the written test and the group drawings, aimed in particular at evaluating the skills acquired. The assessment of learning takes into account, in addition to the final products of the exercise, the assiduity and commitment, as well as the ability to communicate the skills acquired. To pass the exam, an at least sufficient evaluation of the two tests and of the drawings is required.
