The course is aimed at providing the fundamental notions for the understanding and analysis of the steady-state and dynamic phenomena in power systems, in particular in high voltage transmission systems and in medium voltage distribution systems. The contents refer to the structure and model of the systems, numerical techniques for load-flow calculations in steady-state conditions, behaviour in fault conditions, and dynamic models in the time domain. The topics are developed with an application focus, oriented towards real transmission and distribution systems.

The topics will provide knowledge and understanding of physical phenomena, models and numerical techniques for solving transmission and distribution electrical networks under both normal operating and fault conditions, and of the dynamic behavior of power systems. The minimum learning outcomes are: - ability to solve circuits representative of transmission and distribution networks under normal operating and fault conditions; - ability to correctly formulate the power flow equations for transmission and distribution networks; - knowledge of the numerical techniques used to solve network equations; - physical understanding of the main dynamic phenomena in power systems.

Matlab).
The knowledge and skills required as pre-requirements are: - basic notions of linear algebra and principles of electrical engineering; - knowledge of the structure of generation, transmission, and utilization systems; - knowledge of the behavior of electrical machines under normal operating and fault conditions; - basic programming knowledge.

Modalita di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Prova orale facoltativa;
Exam: Written test; Optional oral exam;
... The exam is written, with multiple-choice questions, open questions and exercises. The rationale for this type of exam is to verify that the main concepts and have been fully understood, the minimum objectives have been reached, and the students are able to identify the salient aspects and to synthesize these aspects in a written document. Duration: 2 hours. To access the exam room, each student must exhibit a valid document with photo. For the part with multiple-choice questions, only one response is correct, and there is no penalty for incorrect or missing responses. For the part with open questions, the responses must be written only on the sheets given by the Commission and no other paper is allowed. During the exam the students may exit from the room only if they withdraw from the exam or deliver the final writing. In case of withdrawal, the text of the exam must be given back with the indication of the student name and surname on the first page by adding the indication "WITHDRAWN". During the written exam, the students may use only clean paper, pen and non-programmable pocket calculators. Personal computers, laptops, tablets, as well as mobile phones and equipment for taking photos or for remote communication, are not allowed. The course material, clothes and the personal belongings must not remain on the work plan, nor under the desk, and must remain where the contents relevant to the exam cannot be reached. Contacting other persons or using the course material is not admitted. If a student is found with any material not allowed in accessible location, or contacting other persons, his/her exam is immediately annulled, and the student will have to leave the room. Any question concerning the written exam must be addressed to a member of the exam Commission. In case the question is of general interest, a member of the exam Commission will inform all the students participating in the exam. It is possible to renounce to the exam only by withdrawing from the written exam. After leaving the exam room, no changes will be allowed to the decision to withdraw or not from the exam. All the writings given to the Commission at the end of the written exam will be evaluated, scored, and registered. The score of the total exam is organized to reach a total of 31 points. If the student obtains 31 points (or at least 30 points with particularly effective responses to the open questions and exercises), the Commission may decide to give the final score 30/30 cum laude. The results of the exam will be communicated through the web portal. The students will have the possibility of viewing their corrected material during the period of the current exam session, in the date communicated by the professor responsible of the course.

In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
