GUEST LECTURE: Sylvain Caillol is Research Director at CNRS. He received his PhD degree in 2001 from the University of Bordeaux. Subsequently he joined Rhodia Company. Later, promoted Department Manager, he headed the Polymer Research Department in the Research Center of Aubervilliers. In 2007 he joined the CNRS at the Institute Charles Gerhardt, University of Montpellier where he started a new research topic dedicated to Green Chemistry and Biobased Polymers. He is co-author of 280 articles and 30 patents. He won the Green Materials Prize in 2018 and 2020, the Carnot prize in 2023 and was nominated Pioneering Investigator by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2019. He is Editor-in-Chief of Green Materials (ICE). This course provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of biobased monomers and polymers within the context of green chemistry and the circular economy. Participants will explore key sustainability metrics, regulatory definitions and standards for biobased and biodegradable materials, and the main EU policies in the field. The course will introduce major renewable feedstocks and biobased monomers, fundamental polymer synthesis routes and applications, from both research and industrial perspectives. It will also addresse sustainable end-of-life strategies, including recycling and covalent adaptable networks, to support the development of sustainable polymer systems.
