Oil and Gas Production and Transportation makes crude and gas a real product that can be sold. The course is aimed to give few vague ideas on the fundamental principles and apparatus for the very first essential treatments on oil such as: Gas Oil Separation Plant (GOSP) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) condensation. GOSP processes crude oil from the wellhead and separates gases and contaminants from the crude for reasons of safety, economy, and environmental protection. Particular attention will be devoted on the aspects concerning the transportation of oil and some ideas for gas. Static separators, pipes, valves and pumping stations will be condisered as unit operations. Metrological aspects concerning oil and gas will be lightly considered.

The course will provide some knowledge on mass and momentum transfer in and between phases in gas/solid/liquid separation and transportation. The course will provide some light knowledge of the apparatus used to perform the unit operations in the oil Production and Transportation. Some basic concept for sizing of control valves pipes and pumps will be provided.
The course will deep the knowledge about thermodynamics of simple transformations (transferring homogeneous fluids by pipes, wasting energy from fluids by valves valves and transferring mechanical energy to homogeneous fluids by pumps) . The course will provide some light knowledge of the apparatus used to perform the unit operations in the oil Production and Transportation. Some basic concept for sizing of control valves pipes and pumps will be provided.
Basic concepts of chemistry and physics, as well basic thermodynamics are prerequisites to successfully follow the course. In particularly the knowledge about the principles of mass momentum and energy conservation and transport is required. Basic concepts about oil and gas extraction are required (gas and oil properties, physical conditions at the head of extraction wells, extraction flow rates).

The student will be asked to produce Individual projects about pipelines and separation devices. Minimal aim of projects: 1 Comparison between the design of water and oil pipelines under one specific set of design specifications. Pipeline energetic profiles (J/m3 and m) must be reported and discusses , The design of pumping stations must be discussed. 2 Comparison of two separation devices under one specific set of design specifications. Any in-depth analysis is encouraged for both projects.

A pipeline will be designed for water and oil for sizing pipe, regulation valves and pumping stations. On the base of the design the fundamentals will be discussed. A separator will be design for sizing separators and regulation system. On the base of the design the fundamentals will be discussed.

ModalitÓ di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Progetto individuale;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Individual project;
The exam is a global evaluation of the performances of the students, an oral discussion of the reports on personal projects for pipelines and separators will be a main part of the evaluation. The ability of using the concepts exposed during the course to defend the reports will be also evaluated. The oral discussion will start by a 15 min presentation of the projects, timing of presentation will be a part of evaluation. Correct presentation of data (number of digits, scale and units) and comparisons (significant drawings and tables in the right form and size) is part of the project and will be also evaluated.

In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.

Expected learning outcomes Understanding of the topics covered and calculation skills in using the related procedures introduced. Ability to recognize and use adequate tools in engineering disciplines for modeling transformations. Ability to build a logical path, using the tools introduced. Criteria, rules and procedures for the examination The exam is aimed at ascertaining knowledge of the topics covered and the ability to apply the theory and related calculation methods. The evaluation expresses an overall judgment of the student's performance and skills expressed during the course and in the final tests. The evaluation is expressed out of thirty as well as the weights relating to the importance of the different parts of the exam topics reported in detail in the presentation during the interview. The exam is passed if the overall mark reported is at least 18/30, the evaluation must be positive in each of the sections to achieve 18/30 in the overall assessment. The exam consists of an oral test in which a report on the individual work done by the student is discussed and deepened the report is presented in an interview that can be part of the test itself. Presentation of the report on the individual work Presentation must be in 20 slides and prepared for 20 min speech (be trained). Upload presentation in PDF format is recommended. The presentation has to show that the student did a good job and that the student has gotten the critical points of procedures. Please, students have to avoid to put in their slides: a. Big tables full of numbers b. Values with the incorrect number of digits c. Comparisons of curves on different scales, better to compare curves from the same graph d. Useless details Presentation is for the next sections: 1. Sizing a pipeline with valves and pumping station (standard approach) 0-10 2. Comparison of sizing for water and oil pipelines 0-4 3. Sizing a gas/liquid separator (detailed analysis of the sizing procedure) 0-10 4. A personal topic on production or transportation (it could be a part of previous topics) For each section the evaluation must be positive to be added in the total score
