Mobility of people and transport of goods have always accompanied evolution of human beings, being fundamental to our society and economy, representing an enabling factor for evolution and job creation. The widespread use of motorised mobility and of freight transport, based on the universal choice of crude oil almost at the beginning of last century, has brought to the useful common choice of a unique energy source, which has at the same time covered a near-monopoly condition in all transport modes: this universal choice is convenient, given for scale economies, requested competences and skills, maintenance with related world logistics, but nowadays discussed versus electrification of motor vehicles. However, mobility and transport have to remain free as far as possible, nowadays sustainable and even compliant with recent environmental expectations, in an innovative way. Transport systems must be sustainable in the light of the challenges to be faced in terms of energy efficiency and share of renewables, GHG emissions, noise pollution and safety. Transport is also global, so effective actions require strong international cooperation.
The course aims at highlighting these issues and at presenting an outlook to the next decades for different transport scenarios in terms of energy efficiency as well as gradual shift to electrification as far as actually useful and alternative fuels. The subject is focused on land based transport systems and key factors to reduce transport dependency on crude-oil derived fuels, contain emissions according to existing limits: new technologies and solutions for transport systems, powertrains, vehicles, including Intelligent Transport System are analysed, in a collaborative way between electrification goals and prerogatives of traditional besides consolidated powertrains.

• Sustainable transport systems: overall sustainability of transport systems (use of space, used energy, environmental issues, safety-related requirements, economic and social aspects); use of energy in the whole transport system and within single transport modes (specific resistances, overall consumptions), with related evolutions; oil-derived fuels and energy carriers; WTW approach and role of electrification; actual use of vehicles to understand needs for new powertrains; technical-economic perspectives related to sustainability with consequence choices and environmental aspects. (4 h)
• Evolution of powertrain technologies and fuels for Light-Duty and Heavy-Duty vehicles: primary energy, energy carriers, legislative framework for CO2 and pollutant emissions; advances in Internal Combustion Engines and vehicle technologies; shift to alternative fuels; vehicle electrification – Battery/Full Electric Vehicles, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles. (7.5 h)
• ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) for more sustainable transport systems. ITS architectures, standards, and main components: communication systems, including V2V, V2X; localisation through AVLS; identification through AVI and AEI; traffic data collection through sensors on the infrastructure and on-board (probe vehicles), for both vehicles and passengers through APC; related integrations, mainly addressed to road transport; evolution of assisted driving (ADAS) towards automated or autonomous vehicles. Examples for integrated ITS. (3.5 h)
