The final thesis represents an important step of the master's degree course and consists of a manuscript that must be prepared in an original way by the student under the guidance of a university supervisor and any internal or external co-supervisors. The student is requested to develop properly detailed study of a technical or theoretical topic. The study should be conducted independently and should critically examine the available documentation, elaborate the problem and propose adequate engineering solutions. The work can be carried out at the departments and laboratories of the University, at other Italian or foreign universities, at external research laboratories and at industries and professional studies with which collaborative relationships are established. The graduating student must demonstrate the ability to operate independently, to have acquired proper knowledge of the topics and the capability in communicating effectively the contents and in supporting a public discussion. The thesis can be also written and presented in English. The commitment to the preparation of the final thesis is about 400 hours, which corresponds to 16 credits. The presentation and discussion of the work takes place in front of a specific committee, which includes both the supervisor(s) and the opponent, who is a professor of the committee who is asked for a particularly in-depth critical analysis of the thesis.

Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria;
The final mark is determined by the committee. The overall average marks obtained in the exams passed during the entire master career, on a 110 basis, are considered as the starting point for grading. As a rule, the committee can add up to a maximum of 8 points taking into consideration: • evaluation of the work done for the thesis (commitment, autonomy, methodological rigor, relevance of the results achieved, etc.); • presentation of the thesis (clarity of exposition, etc.); • excellence of the study path (for example, the number of honors received, experiences in foreign universities and research centers, any extracurricular or student planning activities etc.). Honors can be awarded, upon reaching the score 110, at the discretion of the committee and by qualified majority, or at least 2/3 of the members of the committee. If the thesis has the necessary characteristics, dignity of the press can be granted only if the final mark is one hundred and ten with honors and the opinion of the commission is unanimous.
